University of Sydney offers postgraduate scholarship in companion animal epidemiology. A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in veterinary science or animal science to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in companion animal epidemiology. The scholarship is valued at $25,000 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress. The Australian or New Zealand citizens can apply for the scholarship.

Eligibility: Applicants should have demonstrable interpersonal skills and demonstrable interest in the welfare problems associated with inherited disorders in companion animals. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens. Applicants must have a full driving license.

Scholarship Description: A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in veterinary science or animal science to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in companion animal epidemiology. In collaboration with the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS), DogsNSW and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA Australia), this project will, for the first time, place the dogs and cats of Australia under surveillance for acquired and inherited disorders. It will involve: -developing software that monitors certain fields in veterinary practice management databases currently in use in Australian practices; -collating emergent data centrally to identify the most numerous disorders per breed and the age at which they most commonly present to veterinarians; -disseminating data and summary information. Opportunities to further develop skills in veterinary epidemiology and biostatistics will be provided.
