We have a dish in my native Australia called Bubble and Squeak. It involves throwing leftovers into a frying pan, throwing in a couple of furiously whisked eggs and a generous pinch of salt. Then you hope for the best. Surprisingly, the result is usually quite flavorsome. The point of the dish is to avoid wasting quality produce by repurposing ingredients so they don't end up in the garbage bin. Similarly, while a discarded date may not be for you, it doesn't mean they can't play a role in your life.Let's face it, unless you are Zsa Zsa Gabor or Larry King then you will probably only get married once or twice. And even Kim Kardashian can only have so many boyfriends. If you like a date but they just don't take your fancy, then why not stay in contact if they are open to it? There are plenty of ways discarded dates can add to your life, and you can potentially add to theirs.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/babe-scott/green-dating-why-you-shou_b_828508.html)

They owned the 90's and each helped redefine the romantic comedy. Now, they're working their magic together.Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts star in the upcoming film "Larry Crowne," set to be released this summer. It's about a man named Larry Crowne (well, naturally), living a solid middle class life until the recession steals away his job, prompting him to go back to his local junior college. Not only does he meet interesting new people to befriend and learn from, he meets his teacher, played by Julia Roberts.More... Most of us know Tim Allen, who visited our homes each week for most of the 1990s, as Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor in the sitcom Home Improvement. There is also a string of films in which he invariably plays the good guy, a very likable fellow of the sort we'd welcome to the neighborhood. Of course, in addition to the TV series, Allen is probably most familiar to audiences as the voice of astronaut Buzz Lightyear in the hugely successful Toy Story films. He's also served as producer of several movies.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellen-sterling/tim-allen-interview-design_b_829465.html)

Eritrea, one of the youngest countries on earth, is quickly emerging as one of the largest violators of human rights. Born in 1993 out of a brutal and hard-fought 30-year war with Ethiopia, Eritrean President Isayas Afewerki wasted little time in rewarding his beleaguered nation of five million people with a regime based on violence and oppression.Following a border-war flare-up with Ethiopia in 1998 that lasted two years, President Isaya Afewerki abruptly initiated swift and immediate actions to consolidate his power and eliminate any independent civil society and rule of law. Top government officials were immediately thrown in jail -- where they remain today, if any are still alive. All independent media organizations were shut down with the immediate arrests of all journalists and media members. This policy continues today, effectively eliminating all freedom of speech.More... A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) -- the first to compare American obesity (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110302/ap_on_he_me/us_med_us_canada_obesity) data with another country -- finds (perhaps unsurprisingly) that American adults have a higher rate of obesity than their Canadian counterparts. And the gap is quite disparate. According to obesity data from 2007 to 2009, (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db56.htm) an estimated 34 percent of Americans are obese compared to 24 percent of Canadians -- a 10 percent difference that further exposes the severity of America's struggle with obesity.More... Not only was it designed by Wallace Neff, "the architect of California's Golden Age (http://www.wallaceneffarchitecture.com/)," but it has a celebrity-filled pedigree of past owners. Curbed LA (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2011/02/theres_no_place_like_judy_garlands_former_home.php) reports that the Bel-Air home was commissioned by American darling Judy Garland in 1938 at the tender age of 16, "the year she was cast as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz." Other celeb homeowners include music industry heavyweights Quincy Jones and Marvin Gaye. The home has five bedrooms, six-and-a-half bathrooms, and sits on over two-and-a-half acres of land. One way of looking at high-speed rail systems is that they are a means by which distant communities get connected, economic development and jobs are fostered, and workers with a diverse array of marketable skills can improve their mobility and thus their employment prospects. But another way of looking at high-speed rail is that it's some nonsense that came to a bunch of hippies as they tripped balls at a Canned Heat concert. That's my takeaway with George Will's latest grapple-with-the-real-world session, in which he attempts to figure out "Why liberals love trains (http://www.newsweek.com/2011/02/27/high-speed-to-insolvency.html)." It's "Matrix" deep, yo:
To progressives, the best thing about railroads is that people riding them are not in automobiles, which are subversive of the deference on which progressivism depends. Automobiles go hither and yon, wherever and whenever the driver desires, without timetables. Automobiles encourage people to think they--unsupervised, untutored, and unscripted--are masters of their fates. The automobile encourages people in delusions of adequacy, which make them resistant to government by experts who know what choices people should make.More... Today marks an obscure but important milestone: the 20th anniversary of the Rodney King beating. The videotaped events of March 3, 1991, and the subsequent trial and acquittal of the LAPD officers, would set off the L.A. Riots more than a year later. For many faith leaders, especially those in South L.A., the period between the beating and the verdicts was a time of foreboding; a non-guilty verdict would mean disaster for their communities. Their worst fears were realized in April 1992 as the city fell into chaos.Clergy, including L.A. heavyweights like Rev. Cecil L. Murray at First AME Church, took to the microphone, stood in front of the TV cameras and called for calm. He and others used their moral voice and standing within the community to remind us all that a shared outrage was not well-funneled into civil unrest.More... Oil prices started to surge even before upheaval in the Middle East had spread to oil producing states. Now the specter of civil war in Libya is intensifying fears of spiraling prices, shortages, pipeline stoppages and, above all, of contagion. This stark reminder of the impact of oil on the global economy should bring a timely dose of reality into the U.S. energy debate. I haven't read a fashion magazine in ages. Even when I see one in the doctor's office, a brief perusal reaffirms that there's not much to hold my attention. However, when the New York Times was delivered on Sunday bearing an extra heft that turned out to be the "Spring Fashion" issue, I decided it to bring it down to the laundry room with me.Scanning the Table of Contents revealed that it would be more of a look through than a read. There was an essay (http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/25/tough-cookies/) by Gloria Steinem (http://www.biography.com/articles/Gloria-Steinem-9493491) about women politicians who were "actually minding the store," accompanied by pictures of Barbara Lee (http://lee.house.gov/index.html) and Barbara Boxer (http://boxer.senate.gov/). The Detroit Pistons are one of the NBA's proudest franchises. From Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer, to Chauncey Billups and Ben Wallace, the Pistons have long been an example of a team where gritty play and teamwork trumps the talent of a singular superstar. The 2010-11 Pistons have besmirched that legacy and provided a shining example of why the NBA may be headed for a lockout this summer. On paper, the Pistons are dreadful. 21-39 in the Central division is amplified in awfulness when you consider the Bulls are the only team in the division with a winning record. Their struggles on the court pale in comparison to their absurd problems off. The Pistons were in Philadelphia Friday to play the 76ers when a large group of players allegedly decided to boycott their team's shoot around before the game. The group, which was led by veterans Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Tracy McGrady, was unhappy with Detroit coach John Kuester and decided to make a public statement. The drama between Hamilton and Kuester has been going on for weeks. According to Adrian Wojnarkowski of Yahoo Sports, in the Detroit locker room last month, Hamilton "bellowed (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-hamiltonpistons022611) at Kuester that he had been a failure in his two seasons in Detroit and was nothing more than an assistant coach." Detroit's turmoil was topped off by a shot of McGrady laughing on the bench when Kuester was ejected from Friday's game.More... My wife and I go to spinning class a couple mornings a week. It's something we like to do together, and I feel like I benefit from having a regular workout partner. Some days I'm just lazy, or I don't want to venture out in the pre-dawn cold, but having a supportive partner motivates me. She bolsters my self-discipline when it flags.Or does she? Is it possible that having a supportive partner might have the opposite and paradoxical effect, actually undermining effort and commitment to health and fitness goals over the long haul? Perhaps we conserve our limited supply of self-control, "outsourcing" our effort when we know that a close friend of partner is in the wings, helping us achieve a goal.More... Politicians lose favor for many reasons. Sometimes it's a buildup of things so overwhelming that even the under-informed get it: Sarah Palin's increasing perception as a mean-spirited, know-nothing, money-grubbing quitter. Mitt Romney's almost farcical flip-flopping. Or Newt Gingrich's hypocrisy, fueled by the discovery of his own affair with a younger staffer while he was constantly chastising President Clinton about Monica Lewinsky.Sometimes a politician just steps in something unexpectedly, like tar. One of my favorite Greek philosophers, Plato, once wrote, "The direction in which education starts a man, will determine his future life." The indisputable fact is that a strong education provides youth with more opportunities for success in the long-run. Of course, there are many cases of individuals who have thrived without any formal education at all, but these cases are few and far between. Nowadays, it seems that a tertiary (university or college) degree only gets you in the door. You might be surprised to hear that according to the United Nations (http://data.un.org/), the percentage of adults who have attained a tertiary education is 39% in the United States. This compares to 55% for Russia, 46% for Canada, 30% for the United Kingdom, 21% for Greece, and 10% for Italy. Americans are among the most educated individuals in the world. Of course, one of the main differences between the US and other countries is the absence of a nation-wide, state-funded university system of institutions. Nevertheless, American students (and their parents) invest a significant amount of their own disposable income to attain these relatively high tertiary graduation rates.More... This week, Brad and the remaining three women went to South Africa to face big fears, big dreams, and even bigger bottles of wine. As a shaky camera followed Brad onto the plane, he confided "I thought I had things under control, not a clue. I have no clue what I'm doing right now." Despite this, Brad did seem happy about one thing. He was excited about the upcoming overnight dates, because he'd get to spend "time" with the women. And by time, he meant Fantasy Suite time. Last month, an annual fundraiser was held in Yorba Linda, Calif., to raise money for combating homelessness and domestic abuse in the local community. Sounds great, right? It's something that Christians, Jews and other faith groups do frequently, except this event happened to have been organized by Muslims.Families who had given up a relaxing Sunday evening at home to attend their community's chicken dinner fundraiser were forced to walk past an angry mob that had gathered hours earlier in protest of their banquet. Shouts of "We don't want you here! Go back home! Go back home! Go back home!" and awful insults to the Prophet Muhammad were yelled as Muslim parents and their children entered the community center. Local news covered the protest, and a video was made of the ugly scene. Please take a few moments and view it here.More... TED is more than the TEDActive (http://conferences.ted.com/TEDActive2011/) satellite event and multiple live webcasts in homes, offices, conference centers and even aboard the International Space Station. It's more than TED Talks (http://www.ted.com/talks) and TEDU Talks where hundreds of millions of people globally are viewing nearly a thousand videos translated into more than 80 languages, with another 80 in development. It's more than the independently organized TEDx (http://www.ted.com/tedx) events that are springing up like wildflowers throughout the U.S. and across the globe. TED is more than the TED Prize (http://www.tedprize.org/), this year granted to artist JR, or TED Conversations (http://www.ted.com/conversations) or the TED Community (http://www.ted.com/profiles). Prior to becoming Chief of Staff for President Obama, Rahm Emanuel famously said: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." With acute financial problems affecting both the City of Chicago and its large nonprofit sector, Mayor-Elect Emanuel has an opportunity to reshape not just the City's budget, but also the way nonprofits conduct business. Let's hope that he doesn't let this crisis go to waste.Chicago area nonprofits have been struggling for several years with steep cuts in government and private funding. This has curtailed crucial services and prolonged the effects of a tough recession for those most in need of assistance. "Do more with less" has become a cliché of the financial meltdown. While Mayor-Elect Emanuel tackles the Chicago's budget deficit of more than $500 million, there is much he can do to help struggling nonprofits shore up the safety net they provide.More... February 18th highlighted two starkly different approaches on the issue of abortion. On that day, the Obama administration issued a rule that refined the "midnight regulations" on federal conscience clause protections that were issued by the Bush administration. The new HHS rule was in effect a partial rescission of the Bush regulation. The Obama rule kept in place key components of the 2008 rule and sought to carefully balance the rights of medical providers who have moral objections to certain procedures with the ability of patients to obtain the medical care they need. It was yet another illustration of the nuanced, respectful, common-ground approach that President Obama and his administration have long taken on the divisive issue of abortion.More... Back in December of last year, I addressed a room full of Sacramento insiders -- including the leadership of California Teachers Association -- and shared my sincere belief that teachers unions must come to the negotiating table and join us in enacting meaningful education reform.Anyone who knows me knows that I don't have an anti-union bone in my body; In fact, I was a field organizer and legislative advocate for CTA and UTLA. But I believe that we can no longer afford to make decisions based on what is best for the adults in our school system. We must make what is best for our students our top priority. Today I was honored to accept the California Charter Schools Association Elected Official of the Year award. In my remarks (http://mayor.lacity.org/stellent/groups/electedofficials/@myr_ch_contributor/documents/contributor_web_content/lacityp_013827.pdf), I challenged the charter school community to hold itself to a higher standard by taking on more high-needs students, shutting down its own struggling schools, and exporting the successes it has pioneered to school districts all across the state.More... I sat before the room dumbfounded. Surrounding me were brilliant, beautiful, driven and successful young women. Each high achievers in their own right. Each on the verge of certain success. Yet, these young women who had originally come to my office to discuss transversing that critical, but sometimes scary path of transitioning from undergraduate education to the rest of their lives, had seemingly only one thing at the top of their minds, "Will I ever find love?"Certainly finding life satisfaction in both the personal and the professional is not unworthy of attention. Yet, their fixation on the issue struck me in terms of its intensity. These brilliant young women, who had each excelled in some of the top universities in the nation were discussing the merits of failing to pursue their greatest professional ambitions and educational potential, for fear that reaching those goals would hamper their chances at finding a lifelong partner. How sad, I thought. If these young women were willing to stunt their destiny and mute their dreams for a love yet unseen, what else would they be willing to do in order to get and hold on to a man?More... Perhaps unsettled by the fact that, when combined, The Huffington Post and AOL News have over 70 percent more unique visitors than the New York Times, and that HuffPost/AOL News' combined page views in January 2011 were double the page views of the Times (1.5 billion vs. 750 million), New York Times executive editor Bill Keller decided to unleash an exceptionally misinformed attack on HuffPost in a column released today (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/magazine/mag-13lede-t.html) and slated for this weekend's NYT Magazine. After opening his piece by patting himself on the back so hard I'd be surprised if he didn't crack a rib (it seems everyone -- even Woody Allen and those folks on Twitter -- thinks he's super "powerful" and "influential"!), Keller turned to the putative subject of his column: "the 'American Idol'-ization of news" and the evils of "aggregation." Red hair. Green tights. Cap and feather. It's a getup every child could recognize and quickly pick out as belonging to Peter Pan, that mischievous youth that never seems to grow up. He might be an English character, penned by a Scottish writer, but Peter Pan embodies a timeless personality, one that has remained the focus of popular culture for more than a century.J. M. As news from Japan grows more dire, Americans are longing for a happier, bygone era when Charlie Sheen -- and not catastrophic earthquakes -- distracted us from the inexorable crushing of the Libyan uprising. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Monday, March 14th, 2011, complete with a flimsy metaphor linking the Freedom of Information Act to bingo cards:WISCONSIN RECALL EFFORT ALREADY HALFWAY THERE - Greg Sargent: "Dems have now collected over 56,000 signatures supporting the recall drives, according to party spokesman Graeme Zielinski, after another surge in organizing activity over the weekend. That's up from rougly 14,000 after last weekend. This means Dems are well ahead of schedule: In each targeted district, Dems need to amass the required signatures -- 25 percent of the number who voted in the last gubernatorial election -- by a deadline of 60 days after first filing for recalls, which happened nearly two weeks ago. In other words, Dems are reporting they are nearly halfway to the finish line, with roughly three-fourths of the alloted time remaining. [WaPo (http://wapo.st/eIlGSO)]More... Japan has repeatedly been referred to as the "most prepared nation in the world" for an earthquake or tsunami disaster. The government has been praised for its readiness via earthquake/tsunami drills, for the prompt organization of the National Self-Defense Forces, and for its preparedness to send in doctors and volunteers. But "being prepared" means even more than that.Japan also does a stellar job of preparing the individual for a crisis. In Japan, every person knows exactly what to do in an emergency.More... Although I'm a first-night Manhattan critic who saw Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark for the first time only three days before its most recently scratched March 15 opening, what follows is not a review. Okay, having seen it from start to finish, I admit this is a review to the extent that I agree with the consensus on its unsatisfying qualities expressed by colleagues in responses written just after the previous postponed February 7 premiere. On the other hand, I'm not certain I'd join one prominent naysayer who suggested that Julie Taymor's highly publicized production (score by Bono and The Edge, libretto by Taymor and Glen Berger) may rank as one of the worst musicals ever. After all, a writer must be careful about registering such a negative superlative when there've been so many bottom-of-barrel-scraping tuners over the past however many decades.More... My first full-time teaching job was as a Latin and religion instructor at a religiously-affiliated (Episcopalian) middle and upper school. I had just exited seminary, and was now faced with the rather daunting task of teaching biblical literature to classes ranging from the seventh-grade level to seniors in high school. I was highly anxious and hopelessly naïve, but still confident that I could convey my experience of academically engaging the biblical text with a critical eye to these young students. It came as a surprise then that I was most often challenged not by the students themselves who embraced such an enterprise, but the parents. One particular seventh-grader came up to me one day, relating that she told her parents of our class on the tower of Babel story as an etiology, a creative mythic account explaining why things came to be for a particular audience. "My dad told me that you are wrong and that I should not listen to you," the student sweetly said, "but I like this class anyway."I have ruminated on episodes like this recently as the issue of teaching the Bible in schools has entered public debate. The commonwealth of Kentucky passed a bill in the Senate in February proposing that "Bible courses" can be offered as electives. Known as Senate Bill 56, the stated intention of such legislation is "to acquaint students with a book that has had tremendous impact on American society and western culture." More recently in early March, the general assembly of the state of Arkansas passed a similar measure in the House to direct the Board of Education to adopt an elective course on the "academic study of the Bible" in any public school district. Such measures not only blur the line between government and religion but they should force parents and students to question whether such an adoption is truly worth the effort, and whether this movement is more politically inclined than pedagogically motivated. Using the Bible in courses at the secondary level is not only beneficial (Song of Solomon as an illustration of Hebrew poetry) but sometimes inevitable when discussing European history or art history. Unlike in Europe, where teaching a course on biblical literature is a non-issue, here in America it becomes a problem as the dip towards a more confessional and less-academic approach seems inevitable. By looking closely at both pieces of recent legislation, one can realize the problem of offering such a course in an American context.More... Perhaps you've heard the term "helicopter parenting" as a way to describe the way today's 20-somethings (Gen Y) were hovered over in childhood by their parents. As a life coach to 20-somethings and consultant to corporations with Gen Y employees, I've seen the effects of an even more intrusive child-rearing style that I have coined as "cockpit parenting." Cockpit parents did more than hover. They sat right in the pilot's seat of their child's life, charting the course and navigating all of the twists and turns. And they often remain there well into their child's adulthood. The result is a trend of 20-somethings who are having trouble thriving as independent adults.Cockpit parenting does come from a place of love. However, this intrusive and often controlling way of child rearing has caused many 20-somethings to be unequipped for life outside of the nest (which is why so many never leave or move back home after college). It is the children of cockpit parents who most often fit the stereotypes of Gen Y: sense of entitlement, consistent need for validation, non-self-starters, mediocre work ethic and a general lack of soft skills. Conversely, 20-somethings who come from backgrounds that may appear to be more difficult (such as having absentee parents) are more prepared for grown-up life because they had no choice but to grow up.More... We always walk a fine line when we try to create our self-image and examine our own actions. We want to stand up for ourselves, but we don't want to become a bully. We want to treat our children as special and unique, but we don't want them to become narcissists. We want to do a good job on a project at work, but we don't want to lose sleep over it.Striking these balances can often feel like walking a tightrope. On the one hand, we want to accept ourselves where we are, and yet we also want to strive to be better. But walking a tightrope is stressful -- it is far too easy to fall over one side or the other. So some researchers have wondered: Is there a more effective way to help us accept our human failings and be motivated to improve?More... WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration lacks a clear strategy in Libya and risks botching the allied air attacks if it doesn't do more to help rebel forces defeat Muammar Gaddafi's brutal regime, according to a conservative critique of the first 48 hours of Operation Odyssey Dawn.In a briefing whose points are sure to be echoed by hawkish Republicans in Congress in the coming days, analysts at the conservative Washington Institute for Near East Policy said the opening salvos of the U.S.-led air attacks were impressive but the long-term objective remains unclear.More... With all the Tweeting, Facebook Liking, and LinkedIn connecting going on, it's easy to forget about blogging and finding the time to do so. Blogging, however, can be extremely useful for more reasons than just populating your website with content (although that's important too). Let's look at some reasons why you must blog and why it should matter to you!
- Blogging gives "voice" to a website: In an age where there are millions of websites and millions more coming online each month, how can you stand apart from the crowd? One way is to get a great-looking site, but as we all know, sometimes budgets allow just the basics. A blog can then step in and (through your voice) give content and character to any website, regardless of how fancy or plain it might be. In fact, some of the best blogs have carried the success of many a less-than-spectacular website.

While some see a visit to the grocery store as an irritating chore, I see it -- especially the produce section -- as a constantly changing source of discovery. I've been a food writer for 20 years, so it's second nature to me to peruse food stores. But, discovering good food is something everyone likes to do. Especially kids -- even picky eaters. When my son was in grade school, his teachers would always invite me to come to class to talk about food. So, I'd arrive with apples and teach kids to become "young food critics." One at a time, we'd taste and describe the attributes of four varieties of apples. Everyone got to choose a favorite and make a slinky apple from the hand-cranked apple corer machine I brought with me. A simple favorite apple was transformed into a magical edible toy. Years later, in high school, a classmate told my son that she discovered her favorite apple at that apple tasting in the third grade.More... By Connie Lawn with Charles SneidermanWe whipped and danced down wonderful, smooth, impeccable trails at the top of Beaver Creek. The mountain has a broad peak and there are some delightfully easy runs on the top with spectacular views of the back bowls at Vail when the weather cooperates. Someone upstairs must have liked us, because we got a break of sunshine on a day which saw light snow in the morning, a few blessed hours or so of sunshine at mid-day, and then strong wind and white out conditions. Some of our best memories on this trip will be Red Buffalo, Cinch, and Powell. Everything we tried was close to perfection, with a bit of occasional hard pack. It is amazing how much I have improved in four days of skiing (this season) at Vail and nearby Beaver Creek. But I still lose all style and confidence when I encounter ice.More... Soledad O'Brien's latest "In America" special, "Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door," examines a searing, hot-button issue in modern American life: the place of Muslims in American society and the hatred that has been directed towards many of them. The special, which airs on Sunday at 8 PM Eastern, focuses on one of the more high-profile battles over Islam in the past year: the fight over a mosque in a small city in Tennessee called Murfreesboro. The fight--in which a wave of anger, protest, threats and, in one case, arson sprang up in response to the attempt of the city's Muslim population to build an Islamic community center--drew national attention (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/murfreesboro-mosque). Along with the debate over an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero and other anti-Muslim acts of violence around the country, it also highlighted a growing strain of fear, resentment and hostility towards Muslims.More... When the Puritans closed the theaters in 1642, they destroyed a theatrical world we have since come to cherish. With the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, play going resumed but the age of Faustus and Hamlet had come to an end. An artistic community is a living entity and two decades of barrenness had taken its toll. It would take time and care for fruit the equal of Shakespeare to once again ripen. For that to happen the spirit of the English Renaissance had to cross the Atlantic and come to America. There in a new land it took root and grew. Finally, four centuries after Shakespeare, the world once again saw truly great English drama.Shakespeare, of course, did not work alone. Each of his fellow playwrights had different strengths. No one could shock a crowd as Marlowe could. No one wrote with more comic sophistication than Jonson. And as for Shakespeare? In contemporary records, he is most frequently praised for being "honey tongued." Simply put, no one could turn a phrase better than Will.More... Any country's security force system is made up of various apparatuses that are unified at the top. Police, anti-riot forces together with intelligence units are networked together to enforce a country's overall security strategy. Uniformed and civilian dressed professionals are used as are various forms of hand equipment, sophisticated technologies, ground vehicles and air bound helicopters.Regulating and containing large numbers of demonstrators can be quite a challenge to any security force. I've always been inspired by a certain caliber of woman born in the late 1800's, who then went on to blaze a trail in the early decades of the 20th century, breaking ground for a later generation who claimed "women's liberation" as their mantra. They were among the first generation of women in modern times to go to war during the years 1914-18, and were profoundly impacted by the losses of young men in that conflict. The 1921 census revealed that over two million women in Britain alone would never marry or have children, instead facing a life of spinsterhood alone. There were those who floundered, but many moved into public life and a "man's world" as never before. Gertrude Bell -- writer, explorer, cartographer, historian, politician, intelligence officer -- was one of the older members of that generation, and her life has fascinated me for years.More... Although 2008 was the year when America demonstrated that presidential politics was accessible to African-Americans and women, it was the 1984 campaign when the doors were first pushed open. And the two people most responsible for the change were Walter F. Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro. Their campaign is most often recalled for the magnitude of their electoral defeat yet an enduring part of its legacy was its commitment to the principle that presidential politics was not simply a preserve of white males.Prior to 1984, the pool of candidates for national tickets consisted entirely of white men. Margaret Chase Smith and Shirley Chisholm had conducted largely symbolic presidential candidacies and Gerald Ford had considered choosing Anne Armstrong as his 1976 running mate before deciding the gamble was too great. But women and minorities were not really viewed as serious contenders.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joel-k-goldstein/mondaleferraro-changing-h_b_841186.html)

Prince William's bachelor party a.k.a. "stag do," in British parlance, went off without a hitch over the weekend, the Daily Mail reports (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1370635/Royal-wedding-Prince-William-holds-secret-stag-party-country-estate-Norfolk.html) and a source at St. James's Palace confirms.Wills, along with Prince Harry took over a Norfolk estate along with 20 other guys, including "James Meade, who Prince William met at Eton, and Thomas Van Straubenzee who attended Ludgroe Prep School in Berkshire with the Prince. Hugh Van Cutsem, whose father owns a large estate in Norfolk, is also understood to have been present. Cutsem is one of Prince Charles' godsons," the Mail writes (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1370635/Royal-wedding-Prince-William-holds-secret-stag-party-country-estate-Norfolk.html). Major League Baseball is getting ready to begin its season this Thursday, March 31, although Chicago teams won't see action until Friday (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/scoreboard/index.jsp#date=04/01/2011). The White Sox will begin their year against Cleveland on April Fool's Day, with the Cubs taking on the Pirates that afternoon as well. With the city's baseball fans abuzz about the prospects for the new season, our interest was piqued by a fact we heard on WBEZ's "Morning Drive" (http://www.wbez.org/blog/city-room-blog/2011-03-28/morning-drive-podcast-apple-pie-baseball-redistricting-84352) on Monday. Rejecting the gloom and that which so many corporate antics inspire, business writers of late (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-crandell/unboundary_b_833211.html) have taken to praising the companies that pursue purpose, articulate values and see for themselves higher values than just boosting the bottom line. And we admire those who embrace corporate social responsibility (CSR) and attempt to give something back to their communities through volunteering and charitable donations. I'm all for this -- though there will always be a part of me that still wonders that we celebrate those who simply try not to be evil. But it seems to me that before we start celebrating all these added extras, we should require of our corporations that they do one basic thing: they should pay their taxes.More... Many people might think that the country's problems stem from the fact that too much money has been going to the very rich. Over the last three decades, the richest one percent of the population has increased its share of national income by almost 10 percentage points (http://www.econ.berkeley.edu/~saez/TabFig2008.xls) (Excel spreadsheet). This comes to $1.5 trillion a year, or as the deficit hawks are fond of saying, $90 trillion over the next 75 years. To put this in context, the size of this upward redistribution to the richest one percent over the last three decades is roughly large enough to double the income of all the households in the bottom half of the income distribution. The upward redistribution amounts to an average of more than 1.2 million dollars a year for each of the families in the richest one percent of the population.More... It's easy and popular to demonize the big banks of Wall Street. In many cases, they deserve it. But the attempt by retailers, big and small, to cast the current political battle over debit card interchange as a fight between Wall Street and Main Street (with merchants, of course, claiming the Main Street mantle), is grossly inaccurate and misleading. When smaller card issuers -- like the credit unions my association represents -- express their deep concern about the impact of interchange, we are painted by proponents of the new law restricting interchange fees as fronting for the big Wall Street banks that they say are the true targets of the legislation and related rules proposed by the Federal Reserve Board.More... China invested $54.4 billion on clean energy in 2010, $20 billion more than the U.S., according to the latest report from Pew Charitable Trusts and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (http://www.pewenvironment.org/news-room/other-resources/investing-in-clean-power-329295) released today. This is one-fifth of a global market that is growing at a record 30% pace. The competitive position of the U.S. has “deteriorated” so much that it slipped down to number three in private investment, as small-scale solar installations launched Germany into the number two spot. Pew and Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s take-away: policies matter as China and Germany had strong ones and US policies stagnated. The report – Who’s Winning the Clean Energy Race? 2010 edition – is the second annual compilation of clean energy investments (which includes renewables and energy efficiency). Last year’s report (http://www.pewglobalwarming.org/cleanenergyeconomy/pdf/PewG-20Report.pdf) (pdf) made big waves when it announced that China had taken over the lead from the U.S. (http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/jschmidt/china_leading_the_clean_energy_race.html) Now, the gap has widened and the US is falling even lower down the rankings (see figure).More... WASHINGTON -- A new measurement from a Gallup Poll (http://www.gallup.com/poll/146864/Huckabee-Continues-Lead-GOP-Positive-Intensity-Tracking.aspx) is producing surprising results in the upcoming race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
