Briefing journalists in Abuja, the chairman of the commission, Mr. Ekpo Nta explained that the commission is considering the action following the findings of the commission's university systems study and review.

Mr. Nta added that the commission had received several petitions on the poor state of the nation's university system and had to invoke its powers under Section 6 Subsection 'B, C and D' to conduct a comprehensive system study and review of Nigerian universities.

He added that the commission will also invite operators of illegal universities for questioning and possible prosecution.
