(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Emeka-Wogu-300x286.jpg) The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu has urged trade unions in the research sector to call off its on-going industrial action and continue to embrace dialogue in the spirit of good industrial relations.
This call was made in Abuja during a conciliatory meeting held by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development Alhaji, Bukar Tijani, representatives of the Federal Ministries of Environment, Science and Technology, Salaries and Wages Commission, including leadership of trade unions in the research institutes.
In his word, "It will be out of place if we leave here without asking you to reconsider your ongoing strike action; I want to appeal to you with all sincerity, and ask you to reconsider your strike by either calling it off or suspend it through proper procedure", Wogu pleaded
While emphasizing the commitments of Mr. President to the implementation of collectively bargained agreements, Wogu added that Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a labour friendly President who is sensitive to the plight of Nigerian workers and Nigerians in general.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development Alhaji, Bukar Tijani, lending his voice to the appeal of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, implored the unions to embrace dialogue in the interest of the nation as no nation can advance in an atmosphere devoid of peace and harmony.
"Let me add my voice to the advocacy that my colleague has made, to say that it is only when peace and harmony exist that any Country can move including our own country, with all due consideration since action has been taken and Mr. President is considering it, we should give him time to decide for the benefit of all our unions in the Research Institutes", Alhaji, Bukar Tijani, solicited.
In his remarks, Comrade Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) requested for time to consult with the members of the unions to inform them of the latest development while the executives work further to ensure timely implementation of the agreements.
"We will report very honestly to our members on the efforts you have made; progress recorded so far and the assurance of a positive response that you have given us and get back to you soonest, as it is in our interest to work with you and resolve this finally", Comrade Adeyemi assured.
