(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Emeka-Wogu-300x286.jpg) The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu has assured Maritime Workers' Union of Nigeria that his Ministry will soon come out with guidelines to regulate the prevailing issues of contract staffing in the Maritime sector.
The Minister revealed this in Abuja while declaring open the 3rd Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Maritime Workers' Union of Nigeria.
In his word, "My Ministry will come out with strict guidelines to regulate and curb the prevailing issues of contract staffing and casual employment in the Maritime Industry as it had done in the Oil and Gas sector", said Wogu.
He added that the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is committed to laying solid foundation required to solve challenges facing the Maritime Sector and improve the social economic wellbeing of Nigerians as evident in the improvement in Power generation and distribution, Agricultural and Railway sector among others.
The Minister urged delegates to elect officers who will promote, defend democracy and enhance industrial peace and harmony for national development. His words, "I urge all delegates to elect Officers who will continue to promote and defend the rights, wellbeing and interests of workers as well as promote and defend democracy, probity and transparency in the Trade Unions and civil governance".
In his opening remarks, the President General of the Maritime Worker's Union of Nigeria, Comrade Anthony Emmanuel Nted lauded the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as evident in the positive transformation of the various sectors of the nation.
"The reformation of the power sector is of great importance to our national economic development. Hence the needs to applaud the relative improvement in power supply. Mr. President in his determined effort to transform all facets of the country laid a commendable plan of restoring the presence of the Country in the sea transport trades. This, he did by sending over One Thousand, Five Hundred young Nigerians from different States of the Federation for overseas training as Cadet Officer, thus our hope of participating in the Maritime Trade is resurrected", Comrade Anthony declared.
