About 2,500 cases of measles have been recorded in some communities across 14 local government areas of the state in the last two months in Kebbi State, the state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Shehu Sambawa has said.

Sambawa spoke in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, yesterday, while receiving some drugs worth N5 million from an international organization, "Save the Children."

The organisation said the drugs and other consumables would enable the state government carter for about 1000 in the affected communities.

Sambawa said the cases were recorded in the last two months in 14 out of the 21 local government areas in the state.

According to Sambawa, the government anticipated that more cases of measles and meningitis would be recorded in the state in the coming months.

He said the frequency and magnitude of these outbreaks constituted a draw back to the efforts of the state government in controlling the morbidity and mortality of the disease.

He said: "However, the state government has approved N2 million for each local government as an emergency respponse to contain the epidemic.

The donation of these drugs by Save the Children international is therefore very timely as it will go a long way to ease the sufferrings of the victims.

The Commissioner called on the public to ensure that they live in clean environment and report any suspected cases of epidemic to the nearest health facility for prompt action.
