Better days are here for athletes and footballers using the stadia owned by the Ogun State Government as the government has opened talks with an Italy based company, Mondor track Sports Company to re-surface the turfs and tracks, re-plant artificial grass and re-floor the basketball pitches of all the stadia.
Indication about this emerged at a meeting held in Abeokuta between some members of the State Executive Council and representatives of the company.
Speaking at the meeting, Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Gbenga Otenuga disclosed that the project was yet another step by the Senator Amosun-led administration to further reposition the sports sector to create employment opportunities and engage the youths meaningfully.
Otenuga stated that when the project is completed, the stadia would become better places for athletes and footballers to ply their trade with lesser possibilities of sustaining injuries.
The Commissioner revealed that the State decided to engage the services of the company because of its track record in the sports industry, saying that on its part, government was not ready to compromise quality as it intends to retain its position as a foremost promoter of sporting activities in the country.
Earlier, Manager of the Company in Africa, Alfred Romans had indicated the readiness of the Company to partner with the State Government in its stride to develop its sport facilities.
Romans said the company was not new to Nigeria as it was actively involved in installing FIFA-standard indoor and outdoor sport facilities in Kaduna and Port Harcourt stadia used for the National Sports Festival they hosted, promising that the one to be installed in the State would be the first of its kind in terms of aesthetics and capacity.
Members of the State Executive in attendance at the meeting include Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mrs Oluwande Muoyo, Chief Olu Odeyemi of Special Duties and Otunba Bimbo Ashiru of Commerce and Industry.
