Title: Gunmen ‘seize ally of Zim PM’

Harare - A district official in Zimbabwe belonging to the prime minister's party was seized by four gunmen on Saturday as the country voted for a new constitution, the party's spokesman said.

"Our district secretary for Headlands was kidnapped this morning. He was taken from his home by armed people," Movement for Democratic Change spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said.

Samson Magumura's current whereabouts are unknown and attempts to contact him have so far failed, he said.

Mwonzora speculated that the attack on the MDC official was possibly the work of the rival Zanu-PF party whose activists are "terrorising the area".

Headlands is a rural town in eastern Zimbabwe where last month the 12-year-old son of a regional MDC official died when the hut he  was in was burned down.

MDC supporters claimed the blaze was caused by a firebomb thrown  by activists from President Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF).

Earlier this week, a senior official from Mugabe's party was hospitalised after his house was firebombed in the same region. - Sapa-AFP
