Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Saturday cast his vote in a key constitutional referendum, saying he hoped it would help catapult the country out of crisis.
"I hope it sets in a political culture where we move from a culture of impunity to a culture of constitutionalism," he said at a polling station at a primary school in Chitungwiza, on the outskirts of the capital.
"We have just exercised one of the most historical steps," he said, paying tribute to victims of political violence.
At least two people died in an outbreak of violence during public debates at the start of the process to compile the draft charter.
"Today those who have died... rest in peace because this is an important stage we have been fighting for."
The proposed text guarantees, among other provisions, protection against all forms of violence and free and fair voting. The draft constitution would also curb presidential powers and pave the way for elections later this year.
Tsvangirai, accompanied by his wife Elizabeth, was greeted by about a hundred supporters. - Sapa-AFP
