The Ogun State Government has handed a final quit notice order to the cow sellers and other illegal dwellers at the Isheri-Karra cow Market along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Lanre Tejuoso who made this known during a visit to the market disclosed that the order was as a demonstration of government’s determination to sanitize the place and ensure that the cow sellers move to the permanent site already approved for them.
Tejuoso described as an eyesore the picture which the market paints to visitors to the State, emphasizing that government could no longer tolerate the nuisance constituted by the existence of the market at a place which is the entry point to the State.
“If you are coming from Lagos, you would see beautiful scenery, in fact a cynosure of all eyes up till you get to Berger; the boundary between Lagos and Ogun. Leaving that place is the Karra market and what you see is nothing but an eyesore. This movement then becomes pertinent in order to provide good scenery that carves a new image and perception for the State”, Tejuoso explained.
The Commissioner disclosed that the new market site had been provided over a year ago with the aim of collaborating with the cattle sellers and dealers for the construction of a permanent world-class modern cattle market where adequate infrastructures would be made available.
“We have concluded arrangements to provide a good road network and other necessary facilities in the new site to smoothen their operations, so they have no reason not to move there” the Commissioner pointed out
He stressed that non-compliance of the cow sellers informed the decision to give them the order, warning that anyone who contravened the notice order would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
