Job Title: Program Officer (PA) (Sequencing Unit)

Our Institute is a leading provider of treatment, care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and other infectious diseases with headquarters in Abuja and Regional offices in Benin, Jos, Kano and the Federal Capital Territory.
The purpose of this job is to provide technical and scientific contribution to the unit's virology project and to contribute through conducting research, training and day to day supervision. In particular, the postholder is expected to conduct viral sequencing of HIV and to analyze and interpret the data obtained. The Unit's programme of work has been defined and the postholder will be involved in ensuring the smooth implementation and completion of interrelated virology projects within this programme.
Roles/Responsibilities:
(i) Be involved, in conjunction with the head and staff of gene sequencing unit, in execution of projects within agreed time lines
(ii) Contribute to the scientific and organizational management of the unit. This will include: – RNA extraction, RT-PCR, PCR purification, sequencing and analysis of samples from the different ACTION cohorts. – Sequencing and analysis of sequence data using relevant packages, including ARV resistance – Adherence to good research and laboratory practice including QA/QC – Preparation of budgets and supply orders – Provision of monthly/regular updates of progress to both senior and junior staff – Training of staff, IT and NYSC members
Management: – Have line management responsibilities for some technical staff within the unit – Promote and support the implementation of relevant safety rules
Relationships: – The post-holder will report to the head of Laboratory research Department, Dr Nicaise Ndembi – He/she will supervise a small team of technical staff within the unit .
Appraisals: The appointment will be for 6 months in the first instance but may be renewed subject to continued funding and to mutual consent by the two parties. The successful applicant must be prepared to accept flexible working hours.
