For remaining compliant and transparent in their financials dealings, the National Assembly has publicly commended the Federal Road Safety Corps, Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Television Authority for a consistent and 100 percent remittance of Internally Generated Revenue to the Federation Account in the last 3 years.
Speaking during a formal commendation at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, the House Committee Chairman on Finance, House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulmumin Jubrin, "this is the first time in the history of the parliament that government agencies are being commended by a Committee of the parliament".
He added that "It is not only to the credit of the Committee but that of the Speaker. It is a positive development and an assignment over which we have been called names but we are happy that our efforts have yielded positive results and we will sustain this practice".
Reacting after the commendation, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka expressed the deep and warm appreciation of the Corps for being singled out of 70 other government agencies whose financial remittances to the Federation Account was put under scrutiny adding that " this gesture has restored my hope on the Legislative arm of the government which was not set up for frictional confrontation with the Executive but to promote good governance". He said that the Corps' remittance to the Federation Account in 2011 and 2012 stood at N2,636,931,049.18 billion.
According to the Corps Marshal, the FRSC "has maintained 100 percent remittance of its internally generated revenue to the Federation Account as a tradition since 1999, even in the face of extremely demanding situations which often pose serious challenges to its resolve to deliver qualitative service to the Nigerian motoring public". He added hat the Corps has kept faith with this tradition of complying with set rules and regulations to promote democratic goals.
He also said that the commendation fall within the context of the Corps sustained initiatives towards safer roads in the country which necessitated last year's commendation from the World Bank as the best lead agency in Africa on road safety management. In the same spirit, the Corps Marshal disclosed that the FRSC will proceed to Sierra Leone and Mali next week to assist these countries in setting up their road safety agencies, thus indicating the extensive mileage which the FRSC has gone to re-define road safety management within Nigeria and Sub- Saharan Africa.
Also responding, the Ag, Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Mallam Musa Mayaki said that " the NTA has come to be known for upholding the ideals of good governance and this has guided our operations. The Fiscal Responsibility Act has remained an impetus to ensure transparency and prudence among government agencies to live within their means in utilization of available resources and sincerity of purpose".
In his own remarks, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi said that the agency has maintained a consistent policy of transparency and remittance to the Federation Account in the last 4 years which runs into N217 billion.
