As the Easter holiday gets underway with heightened human and vehicular traffic, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka has warned motorists against violating lane rules and creating chaotic road situations.
He gave the warning at Kotonkarfe, near Lokoja, Kogi state while monitoring Easter Special Patrol along the route. The Corps Marshal who had earlier spent hours managing the chaotic traffic situation caused by impatient drivers undermining lane discipline and engaging in route violation along Abuja-Abaji road, expressed displeasure at such attitudes. Accordingly, he warned that henceforth, route violators would be apprehended and summarily tried at the Mobile Courts for instant punishments.
The Corps Marshal was particularly disturbed by the rate of lane indiscipline among drivers which was identified as the major cause of long queue of vehicles experienced along the route. Consequently, he ordered the blockage of the side where the route violation was widespread, which ultimately led to the return of normalcy to the road.
While releasing the vehicles of those drivers caught in the act which were temporarily impounded to serve as deterrence to others, he warned them not to repeat the act, as stiffer penalties await them. To this end, he directed field commanders to take appropriate measures to guide against acts that could compromise free movement of traffic and its accompanying hazards during the Easter and beyond.
"Patrol team leaders across the country have been directed to put stiffer measures in place to guide against all forms of lawlessness by drivers. And whoever fails to abide by the rules would be apprehended and tried at the Mobile Courts being conducted across the commands in the country for summary trials," he said.
The Corps Marshal commended the patrolmen for their commitment to crash and obstruction-free road and reiterated the determination of the management to the success of safer roads, fuller lives campaign. This he said is being pursued through greater collaboration with relevant stakeholders, especially the security agencies.
He appealed to the security agencies working with members of the Corps to keep the road safe during the festivity to sustain the collaboration beyond the season, urging them to always observe their personal safety in managing the traffic. He further stressed that road safety is a collective responsibility of all Nigerians and warned convoy drivers not to be tempted into breaking the lanes while using the road, to avoid unnecessary holdups.
