Title: 2011 Doctoral Fellowships at Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA)
Post by: scholarscope on Mar 24, 2011, 09:24 PM
[attach=1] HUMA – the Institute for the Humanities in Africa – is a new initiative at UCT, intended to create a space of dynamic interdisciplinary community for scholars and students in the humanities at large, and to promote independent and informed debate within wider intellectual publics. Based in the Faculties of Humanities and Law, HUMA's intellectual agenda is shaped by two primary research themes, On Being Human and Circuits of Consumption (for more information, see www.huma.uct.ac.za)

HUMA is firmly committed to promoting the next generation of scholars in South Africa and the continent at large. To this end, funding from the Ford Foundation has enabled the award of four full-time doctoral fellowships, intended for outstanding young scholars who wish to pursue an academic career. Each fellowship will provide four years of funding, on condition of satisfactory progress year by year. We will consider applications from interested applicants with a Masters' degree in disciplines or fields of study in the Humanities and Law. Each doctoral fellow will be expected to pursue his or her research informed by one or both of HUMA's primary research themes.

The doctoral programme on offer will include (non-credit bearing) courses on critical theoretical and methodological issues, which doctoral fellows will be required to attend. Given our interest in nurturing academic talent, doctoral fellows will also be expected to play an active part in HUMA's intellectual life, including our programme of seminars, symposia and lectures.

Research Fields: 'On Being Human' & 'Circuits of Consumption'

Each fellowship is worth R149 000 per annum.

The fellowships will be awarded to committed and talented graduates, with strong analytical and research skills, who are intent on an academic career. We welcome applications from scholars in South Africa and the continent at large.
