Seattle Sounders striker, Obafemi Martins, has allayed the fears expressed by his coach Sigi Schmid that he could be ruled out for a long time after he missed the team's CONCACAF Champions League 1-0 home loss to Santos Laguna due to injury.
.
Coach Sigi Schmid already has Martins' strike partner Eddie Johnson ruled out due to a hamstring injury and he could not afford to lose the former Newcastle forward to another long-term injury as initially reported.
.
''Oba [Martins] tried to play in Salt Lake, had a little bit of an injury going into that game and tried to play — something that had bothered him when he played with Nigeria. He felt he could maybe get through it, and that game didn't make it any better, it made it worse. We figured if we tried to play him today (yesterday Santos Laguna), we didn't know how long that would knock him out."
.
"Oba's injury is a tendon above the patella that's where his quad comes in that's aggravated'',Schmid had said before the game.
.
But Martins himself has confirmed that he only sustained a slight knock on his knee which may rule him out of Sounders' next two games.
.
"It's nothing serious but I have a minor knee injury which would not rule me out for as that long as was being reported. May be I will be out for one or two games," the former Levante and Rubin Kazan striker explained.
.
Martins who had a below-par performance on his return to the Super Eagles in a 1-1 draw against the Harambee Stars of Kenya in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying game in Calabar a fortnight ago, has played two games for his MLS side against Portland Timbers and Salt Lake since his sensational switch from Spanish La Liga side Levante last month.
I also believe he'll return for his club very soon. I do not think the injury is very serious. The club would miss him though
