A source at a security meeting held at the Presidential Villa today said members of the committee will work closely with the office of the National Security Adviser and is expected to submit its report to the president in two weeks.
The terms of reference of the committee, according to the source, are:
- To consider the feasibility of granting pardon to members of the sect.
- Collate clamours arising from different interest groups who want the federal government to administer clemency for members of the religious sect;
-And also to recommend modalities forĀ granting of the pardon should such step become necessary under the prevailing circumstance.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammed Abubakar III had urged the president to grant Amnesty to the militants.
However, it appears the federal government has capitulated on its stand over the granting of amnesty to members of the northern Islamic sect.
