THE Rose of Sharon Foundation yesterday in Lagos extended a helping hand to 143 widows, 255 of their children and 14 orphans with cash donations, scholarship awards and offer of vocational training.
The cash donations were made towards the widows' businesses and the payment of house rents under the foundation's 6th empowerment programme.
Speaking at the event, Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs Abimbola Fashola, who is the grand patron of the foundation, charged the widows, their children and the orphans to make good use of opportunity offered them by foundation.
She particularly stressed that the beneficiaries should aim to become successful entrepreneurs who would employ others.
President, Rose of Sharon Foundation, Mrs. Folorunso Alakija, said the foundation has so far empowered about 282 widows from the start of its initiative till December 2010.
Alakija added that 577 scholarships children of widows and 35 orphans have also benefitted from the foundation's scholarship awards and vocational training.
She said the foundation has taken it upon itself to help widows, their children and orphans across Nigeria because they have been left in a world where few people cared about their wellbeing.
