(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/airforcelogo-300x224.jpg) "We are witnessing another achievement in the life of the present Chief of the Air Staff in particular and the Nigerian Air Force in general" the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada stated this during the commissioning of the United Airline Boeing 737-500 at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja recently.
The Minister of State for Defence who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Aliyu Ismaila remarked that this achievement by the Nigerian Air Force was not a surprise to him. He added that there are competent personnel in the management level of the Nigerian Air Force, beginning from the Chief of Air Staff to the Managing Director of Aeronautical Technical Services Limited.
Erelu Obada reiterated that with the coming on board of Boeing 737-500 series, the Nigerian Air Force will build its airlift capability in support of the United Nations and African Union Peace Support Operations.
Speaking earlier, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh said that the essence of the joint venture between AETSL and Solicom Engineering Limited is to transform the Nigerian Air Force into a self-reliant and highly professional fighting force. He further noted that the partnership has brought about Boeing 737-500 series.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited, Air Vice Marshal Alkali M Manu said that the idea behind the purchase of this aircraft came up during the last Regional Conference for Air Chiefs of West, North and Central Africa organized by the United States Air Force.
Alkali Manu revealed that the air services venture is planning to purchase additional B737-400 in August 2013. Dignitaries present at the occasion comprised Air Vice Marshals, Air Commodores and Group Captains, among others.
