The Ogun State Government will work harmoniously with the Federal Government to construct and maintain roads for the people as problems of roads in Nigeria transcends what a tier of government can complete.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Olamilekan Adegbite made this revelation today in his office at a meeting with officials of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), led by its new Director of Highways, in the South West, Engineer Kabir Abdullah.
Arc. Adegbite disclosed that most of the roads being constructed were Federal roads which had been left unattended to for a long time, saying the passion to cater for needs of the people informed state government’s decision to fix such roads as the people are not concerned about which tier was responsible for maintenance.
Arc Adegbite who cited an area where Federal and State government could have clashed on road matters said “We do not intend to have any rift with the Federal Government, that was why we told the contractor handling Ejirin – Oluwalogbon Road in Ijebu Ode to go ahead and execute their project first”
He added that the asphalt overlay being done on the road by the Federal Government would not last because to treat the problem, the sub-base needs to be changed which is what the State Government wants to do to ensure a long lasting road”.
He said that while the contractor was executing the Federal Government’s contract on the road, the State Government on its part would continue with the construction of drains, side walks and the flyover bridge along the road.
Earlier, Engr. Abdullah had disclosed that FERMA’s role was to effectively monitor and manage Federal roads across the country for the benefit of Nigerians.
Abdullah urged the State Government to always feel free to consult and carry along his establishment whenever it intends to implement policies that affect Federal roads in the State.
