Barely twenty fours after it joined the league of global agencies for Quality Management Systems certification, the Federal Road Safety Corps has added another feather to its cap through the Leadership Government Agency of the year 2012 award, during this year's conference and awards ceremony organized by Leadership Newspaper Group.
Reacting after receiving the award, surrounded by some management staff, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka noted that the award is remarkable and symbolic coming from the media sector under the aegis of Leadership Newspaper thus indicating a robust endorsement from the Nigerian press of the Corps' numerous initiatives which has impacted positively on road safety management.
On the award which is coming immediately after the Corps' ISO 9001:2008 certification, the Corps Marshal indicated that "while the certification was a confirmation that the FRSC had complied with world-wide standard of management on the delivery of it mandate of ensuring sanity on the nation's highways, the leadership award is in recognition of the Corps' efforts last year for giving a new meaning to its statutory mandate by closely aligning with its vision of enthroning safer motoring environment in Nigeria".
He added that these recognitions will provide the impetus for the FRSC as the nation's lead agency on road traffic administration and safety management to redouble efforts towards effective co-ordination of all safety-related matters for safer road use but solicited for the buy-in of all motorists and relevant stakeholders in the country to achieve set goals.
Speaking earlier on the conference topic "rebuilding Nigeria", the Niger State Government, Dr. Babangida Aliyu noted that the process of rebuilding Nigeria has become imperative especially in view of multifaceted challenges facing the country at the moment, adding that Nigeria has failed to meet the expectations of many who believed that wealth of human and material resources were determinant factors for its development.
The Niger State Governor also said that the last five decades has witnessed monumental " loss of fortunes on account of waste, corruption and insecurity" and advised further that "to get the rebuilding initiative right therefore, we need to get the perspectives in their right economic, social, political and ethno-religious contexts", he added.
In his welcome address, the Chairman Leadership Group, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah opined that "it is time to decisively end the type of corruption we hear about daily and competently end the terrorism that taken over the land. It is time to start the process of rebuilding our nation in earnest, for the world is not waiting for us. There is too much blood in the land and that has to stop". He also placed the buck on the government because according to him "there are some things in a nation that only a government can do. We therefore call on the Federal Government to take charge and start doing the work for which it was elected. There is no time and there should be no excuses".
Many deserving Nigerians also received the Leadership award in various categories such as the Sultan of Sokoto His Eminence Abubakar Sa'ad and Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan who bagged the Persons of the year award, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom as Governor of the year, Chairman of Daar Communication, Raymond Dokpesi as Businessman of the year and other notable Nigerians who have excelled in their various fields of endeavor
