(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nigerian-coat-of-arms-logo-5321-300x281.png) A Steering Committee for implementing the Freedom of Information Act has been inaugurated for Federal Ministry of Education. The Permanent Secretary, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala inaugurated the 14-man Committee comprising mainly of Heads of Department, Directors of Legal, Press and Public Relations in the Ministry as well as Heads of SERVICOM and ACTU. The Committee is being chaired by the Director of Human Resources Mr. Obi Ikibeh.
Dr. Nwaobiala said that the exercise was in compliance with the directive to MDAs to constitute such Committees to ensure prompt response to request for information by the public under the provisions of the Act. The steering committee is also to advise management on the propriety of release or non-release of information, ensure that information on activities, policies, structure, functions and all such matters required for public consumption as stated in the Act are published and to ensure that the report on the implementation of the Act are filed and submitted within stipulated time limit.
The Permanent Secretary enjoined the Committee to swing into action immediately, nominate the Desk Officer and draw an appropriate schedule of duties.
The Chairman of the Steering Committee responding on behalf of other members of the Committee, Mr. Ikibeh, assured that the assignment would be carried out with all sense of duty and responsibility.
