"Cheer up, watch funny shows, laugh heartily and you'll stay healthy!" It's ever-present advice, but it's wrong, wrong, wrong. We hear it all the time. If you're ill, spend a few days glued to the screen watching the exuberance of "Glee" and the laugh-out-loud comedy of "Seinfeld" reruns and, so goes the common wisdom, you'll have a speedy recovery. Or even better, stay cheery and you won't get sick in the first place. Unfortunately, there's no good scientific evidence for this sort of progression. Worse, this misconception draws attention away from the real relationships between happiness, health and long life. What does science really say?On the face of it, the idea that an Elizabeth Edwards or any other brave person riddled with cancerous tumors could laugh away the disease -- that they would get better if only they tried really hard to cheer up -- is a form of magical thinking that is terribly implausible. Of course, someone will always offer up an example -- an anecdote of a miraculous recovery -- and there are indeed rare cases of a seemingly miraculous healing. But for every miracle, millions of brave patients succumb. Was it because they did not laugh enough?More... Or put another way, is there any limit to how small or poorly attended a Tea Party rally can be before the press finally stops showering the right-wing movement with coverage? Based on the avalanche of reporting that yesterday's minuscule Tea Party rally in Washington, D.C., generated, the answer appears to be, no.Just how sparse was the Tea Party crowd? A Bloomberg dispatch tactfully noted (http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-03-31/republicans-promise-at-tea-party-rally-to-stand-firm-on-spending.html) the rally attracted "dozens" of supporters.More... Minimal Impact to the Global Supply Chain? In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it has become fashionable for some in the global business community to believe that the economic impact of Japan's earthquake will be minimal. No one can truly know the ultimate impact because the world has never experienced such a severe natural disaster in an economy so critical to the global supply chain: This is not Indonesia, New Zealand, Chile or Pakistan -- which have also experienced recent severe earthquakes -- this is Japan.More... With this essay, I issue a challenge to LGBT Americans across the country regarding one of the most important priorities for our community at this moment: the urgent need to contribute our voices, our efforts and our resources to the existential struggle that the labor movement is currently waging against the Republican forces seeking to cripple the right of workers to collectively bargain and roll back workplace protections. I believe that our national organizations need to be putting feet on the streets and money on the table to support labor. I believe that we, as individuals, need to show up to support and defend workers. I do not suggest that this work should happen to the exclusion of our continued advocacy on traditional LGBT issues, but I do suggest that it should be a major commitment of the LGBT community right now, not just a symbolic statement of support. I urge this course of action for three basic reasons.First, labor rights is an LGBT issue. As Gary Gates and others have long since demonstrated, LGBT Americans come from the same economic and demographic origins as all Americans. That means that 65-70% of LGBT Americans have no college degree. The median household income for LGBT Americans ranges from about $35,000 per year in the poorest states to about $65,000 in the richest. Huge numbers of LGBT Americans have either no health insurance or inadequate health insurance. If anything, these economic challenges are even more acute for LGBT workers, who enjoy no federal protection from workplace discrimination and no protection under the laws of many states, no access to equal health benefits in most companies, no access to equal treatment for their families under the laws of most states, and unequal treatment for their relationships under federal law. Working-class LGBT people tend to be less socially visible in our civil rights efforts, just as working-class people tend to be less socially visible in American public life as a general matter, but a large majority of LGBT people are directly at risk from the Republican assault upon workers.More... Recently, the Census Bureau confirmed what many of us who work in immigrant communities already know -- that the fastest growing segments of the U.S. population are those who identify as Hispanic or Asian (http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/2010_census/cb11-cn125.html). Along with other immigrant communities -- from the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, Latinos and Asians, these are the Americans who are paying taxes and casting votes -- the backbone of our economy and the pulse of our democracy. Jointly, the country's immigrant and minority communities need to find more effective ways of harnessing our economic power and political potential into policy making that responds to the needs of a diverse America. From decisions on government contracts to education policy, our country's leadership is neither prepared for, nor reflective of, the population it serves. We're used to hearing about the diversity in leadership in places like San Francisco (where the board of supervisors has more non-whites than whites) and in New York City (where the majority of City Council members are now black, Hispanic or Asian (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/06/nyregion/06council.html). Although those places still have communities who are unrepresented in political leadership, they are far ahead of the newest places on the map who have growing minority populations -- Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Utah, and Vermont, all places where the percentage of minorities grew by more than 50 percent from 2000 to 2010. Most of these states have almost no representation from minority and immigrant communities.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sayu-bhojwani/from-the-community-to-the_b_844587.html)

While prices at the pump shoot over $4 a gallon, five United States senators are calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) (http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/677-e2-wire/152083-cantwell-snowe-rockefeller-push-ftc-on-gas-prices) to investigate whether gas prices are being manipulated. The job of assuring that our energy markets are fair actually falls not upon the FTC but upon the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), but it's had little success to date at curbing oil speculation and slowing this latest run-up in price. The senators may be hoping that the FTC, using a newly crafted 2009 law, can lend a hand. There's good reason for Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) to be frustrated with the CFTC. The Dodd-Frank Financial Reform bill, signed into law on July 21, 2010, mandated that the CFTC write rules for the oil markets designed to stop speculation from controlling prices on crude oil and gasoline and driving them to astronomical levels, as they did in 2008. The bill also demanded that these rules be in place and working by February of this year.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/daniel-dicker/oil-speculation-continues_b_844663.html)

Antiquities is "the only area of the art world that deals entirely with stolen goods." Perhaps that is an exaggeration -- certainly, many ancient objects were never looted from historic sites or even dug out of the ground -- but it is a bit of hyperbole that has a growing level of acceptance, to some degree with the public and overwhelmingly with archaeologists. Clemency Coggins, professor of archaeology and art history at Boston University, who made this comment, describes herself as a moderate on this issue because she believes that some antiquities can be legally owned. However, in her ideal world, antiquities dealers would "get out of the business."One might assume that the trade in antiquities would be diminishing on its own. Almost every nation on the planet (the United States is a notable exception) has enacted laws to limit or prohibit the export of cultural property older than some specified number of years. With Mexico, it's pre-Columbian objects; with Pakistan, it's art and antiques dating before 1857. Presumably, no more comes out of these and other countries, leaving a dwindling supply of stuff that hasn't already been donated to museums.More... How many times does one need to say it before people who are supposed to have their fingers on the pulse of the country "get it"?In February 2010 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-abrams/bring-republican-budget-t_b_467578.html), and again in August 2010 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-abrams/for-dems-to-win-in-novemb_b_693740.html,) I urged both Houses -- when Democrats still controlled them -- to bring the Ryan budget to a vote. In the years that followed, my ex would go to a high-powered divorce lawyer in Manhattan, who would say to him, "Oh, Christ! Not another one. If I had a penny for every time a man comes in here saying that his wife 'found herself'!" Then, it was wounding: a line of men, teeth bared, baleful gazes, waiting for one of the women before them to try to break through and run. The moment a mother delivers a new person into the world, her next amazing feat begins: producing and delivering the perfect food for that baby.Hormonal changes at delivery trigger the lactation process. Breast milk is the ideal combination of protein, fat, immunity boosting factors and key nutrients to help a baby's body and brain grow strong. The act of nursing also seems to lower mothers' risk of breast and ovarian cancer. For the most part, breastfeeding requires just mom, baby and a comfortable chair or bed. No dishes, no groceries, no bottles! However, this natural process is not without its rough spots. Nipple soreness, anxiety and exhaustion strike most nursing moms at some point. The most important advice to new moms: Don't give up. Make sure to line up expert help from maternity nurses or a lactation consultant.More... It is rare that a commentator gets to write a column that is unreservedly rosy and infused with optimism for the future. This kind of positive punditry doesn't sell newspapers, but I think it's certainly salutary given all that we've had to contend with over the last few years. So, here it goes: Unemployment is at 8.8%, a 2-year low. We added 216,000 jobs (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/02/business/economy/02jobs.html) last month, of which 200,000 were private sector (just what we needed to fill the void left by the receding stimulus). We've seen a full percentage point drop in unemployment over four months and now economists expect 2.5 million jobs (http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/03/news/economy/jobs_economy_recovery_2011/index.htm) to be created this year. No doubt, the countervailing news is from the public sector where local governments have shed 416,000 jobs since an employment peak in September 2008, and dropped 15,000 jobs in March.More... Many tributes were paid to Martin Luther King, Jr. on the day commemorating his assassination 43 years ago. One commentary in particular caught my eye and stirred my ire. The noted author, Hampton Sides, contemplating the August 28th unveiling of Dr. King's Memorial on our nation's Mall and the development of four new documentaries about his life, wrote that we should resist deifying Dr. King and remember that he wasn't a saint, but a "sinner."When we erect monuments to our nation's heroes, it is to memorialize them and celebrate their contributions to our country. When standing in the shadow of their magnificent statues, I want to be inspired by their greatness, not reflect upon their character flaws or human frailties. Whenever I visit the Jefferson Memorial, I stand in awe of this true Renaissance man. Would Mr. Sides, instead, have me remember that Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence with one hand while holding slaves with the other? Should I ponder Jefferson's hypocrisy rather than his contribution to history?More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/janet-langhart-cohen/mlk-assassination_b_847199.html)

The 2003 Iraq alumni association is studded with stars. Its reunion would be a cheerful occasion for mutual congratulations. Donald Rumsfeld is promoting his self-serving memoir on the talk show circuit where he is received as a respected elder statesman. George 'Slam Dunk' Tenet is distinguished professor in Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University. Condoleezza Rice of Stanford University has just composed an endearing, skillfully mendacious account of her noble service to the Republic. General Stanley McChrystal, who set up the network of torture facilities in Iraq and then laid the cornerstone of its Begram counterpart, teaches Modern Leadership at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. Paul Wolfowitz, spiritual leader of the neo-con pack, is avidly sought by network anchors for sage advice on Egypt, Libya, Bahrain et al. His brother in arms at the Pentagon, Douglas Feith, is also edifying Georgetown youth as professor and distinguished practitioner in National Security Policy -- evidently without a reference letter from General Franks who judged him to be "the f.....g stupidest guy on the face of the earth." (From (http://www.slate.com/id/2099277/) Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack). Meghan O'Sullivan, right-hand woman to L. Paul Bremer III in the Green Zone, is the Kirkpatrick Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. There, she invites media inquiries on some 42 topics ranging from accountability through ethics, judgment & decisionmaking to volunteerism and women. Many other less renowned alumni have done commensurately as well. This recitation of the professional successes racked up by those who produced the catastrophe of Iraq calls our attention to how evanescent memories of that historic exercise in deceit and failure are. It is necessary to point this out because the process of individual rehabilitation is apace with the spreading number of benign retrospectives of Iraq that are drawn upon to offer forecasts for America's future place in an unruly Middle East.More... One of the dubious benefits of "voluntary" recruitment into the military, rather than a draft, is that presidents can more easily conduct wars despite a skeptical public, and another is that some civilians can regard service as mainly another cash transaction, as if to say, "nobody forced them, too bad if they claim to be invisibly hurt."How can warriors be welcomed home by us, including those who have passed up the opportunity to enlist? Regardless of how we regard the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and earlier in Vietnam, what's a decent way to help reintegrate soldiers who have served in our name?More... President Obama outlined his plans for dealing with the economy today. In large part, he has let the GOP set the terms of the debate about America's economic future since the mid-term elections of 2010. Today, in a speech at George Washington University, the president sought to recapture his leadership position by offering a progressive vision of a new American future -- a stark contrast to the GOP's dark budget proposals that would leave the elderly without health care, millions of vulnerable people (many children) without food stamps and massive cuts in public education. President Obama offered a moral vision of what America should be. Consider his opening words (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/14/us/politics/14obama-text.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1):
From our first days as a nation, we have put our faith in free markets and free enterprise as the engine of America's wealth and prosperity. One of the weirdest things about the ongoing commedia dell'arte performance that is the Donald Trump campaign for president, is that he's spent all of his time in recent weeks indulging in conspiratorial nonsense instead of working on an affirmative case for his presidency or a "Trump vision for America." The best that any of has to go on is that he will make people "respect" us again and he will swindle world dictators on tent leases.By putting forth no ideas for the political media to talk about and insisting on promulgating long-debunked conspiracy theories, Trump is all but goading the press to engage in the most painful vetting process imaginable. What if it turns out, say, that he didn't actually send investigators to Hawaii (http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/04/08/trump_hawaii_investigators), as he claimed? "We Thank Our Employees For Being Recognized as One of Chicago's Top 10 Workplaces!" read the sign in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago last Saturday. But while the Hyatt was thanking the employees for the award, the small print at the bottom of the sign revealed it wasn't the workers, who had done the voting, but rather the Chicago Tribune and Crain's Business. That point was made even clearer by a thousand people marching in protest around the Park Hyatt that day, hotel workers who have called for a boycott of their own workplace, joined by teachers (http://www.ieanea.org/featured/we-are-one-rallies-for-workers-rights/), state employees, clergy (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/www.iwj.org) and community. The last time I had seen that "Top 100 Work Place" sign was last summer, when I was getting arrested for civil disobedience supporting those same Hyatt workers. The Wrap, who broke the news of her casting (http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/billy-bob-thornton-and-eva-longoria-join-cast-baytown-disco-26527), says there's been no official word on which role she'll take on, but a strong assumption can be made that she'll be playing the mistress in alleged distress.More... April 12, 2011 is marked historically as the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War when the attack on Fort Sumter, SC, initiated hostilities between the North and South. This war resulted in a greater number of casualties on both sides -- 600,000 -- than the combined number of war dead in all our conflicts before or since including two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the present-day wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. That day was also the day the first African-American President signed a "compromise" bill that will include one of the most clearly racially targeted pieces of legislation to come from Congress since Reconstruction: the complete cutting off of funds for abortion procedures in the District of Columbia whose population is overwhelmingly Black. Another part of this legislation is the serious reduction in funding for WIC which provides nutrition to mothers and children who have been failed by our increasingly elitist economic system.More... It's the staples that bond a relationship. The shared moments lingering over a Chardonnay, making a meal together, laughing at the same joke, rolling around on the couch. It's these fragile moments of tenderness that will form the glue that holds us together during life's inevitable speed bumps and sometimes even unexpected boulders. These are the currency of love. After interviewing more than 300 men and women about dating and mating, I cannot stress how important it is to make time for romance. This is corroborated by any number of studies, which point to the fact that our relationships are the most important contributor to our overall happiness. Yet we often squander the most precious resource we have by neglecting to tend the fires of affection.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/babe-scott/how-to-give-oldfashioned-_b_846161.html)

Whatever has possessed Claude Lanzmann to express this crazy recantation, condemning (Le Monde, 17-18 April) the anti-Qadhafi operation he had earlier (Le Monde, 16 April) so ardently hoped and prayed for?How can a man of his character put on a show of such capriciousness--one day signing a petition calling for France to intervene, and then, just four weeks later, condemning the same intervention and betraying his own signature?More... If you are in the mood to be scared and current gas prices and foreclosure reports aren't doing it for you, might I suggest the movie Insidious? Simply put, it's terrifying. Without gore, it manages to be invasive and haunting, giving you a scare that lingers for days. I won't give away anything that isn't already in the movie trailer. Let's just say it involves the perfect formula of a family with small children, a really creepy house, some really, really terrifying entities from the other side and incredible camera angles. What's missing however, are the on- camera angels. That's the only issue I have with it, like I've had with movies in the past in a similar genre. Where are the good guys? Where are the energies of white light or beings with wings? You know... where are the angels? Going back to the 1982 movie Poltergeist, the only good guys in the these types of haunted house or haunted people movies are the psychics. Even in the case of the movie Ghost, Whoopi Goldberg's character only turns into an authentic psychic half way through the movie. Now, Sam, he was a good dead guy. But it didn't look like he got a lot of help from the other side when he was most in his time of need. Even Constantine got just about zero help from the other side. Even God's angel turned on him and then eventually on all of mankind. The only time Constantine catches a break, is when he makes it through his own personal judgement day and God helps at the very end of the movie. As he says himself, there's always a catch. In the movies, people have to make deals to get angelic help, but the dark comes for you no matter what. And there are plenty of freaky visuals to go with those demons on the big screen.More... Michael Mandel (http://www.businessweek.com/bios/Michael_Mandel.html), the chief economist for BusinessWeek, was recently doing some research for a textbook he's revising when he stumbled upon (http://innovationandgrowth.wordpress.com/2011/04/18/air-force-certifies-the-weakness-of-domestic-manufacturing/) a surprising entry (http://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2011/03/21/2011-6502/nationwide-categorical-waivers-under-section-1605-buy-american-of-the-american-recovery-and) in the Federal Registry. On March 21, the U.S. Air Force waived the "Buy American" provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for a construction project at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. As workers tried to build a few stimulus-backed housing units, it became apparent that a number of simple domestic items couldn't be procured from American manufacturers – namely, ceiling fans, shower rods, towel racks, toilet-paper holders, and all manner of screws and fixtures.According to the registry entry, a contracting official
has determined that the above items of manufactured goods are not produced in the United States in sufficient and reasonably available quantities and of a satisfactory quality. The domestic nonavailability determination for these products is based on extensive market research and thorough investigation of the domestic manufacturing landscape. This research identified that these products are manufactured almost exclusively in China.

Guys quote movies -- we know this. In my opinion, one of the most quotable is the movie Groundhog Day where Bill Murray's venerable comedic talents have never been on more conspicuous display. There are so many great lines: "This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather." Or how about, "This is pitiful; a thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat -- what a hype. Groundhog Day used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the hog out, and they used to eat it. You're hypocrites, all of you!" Murray plays weatherman Phil Conners who has become trapped in the same day, over and over -- Groundhog Day. No matter what he does he wakes up the next morning and its still Groundhog Day. A friend promises him he'll feel better tomorrow to which he replies, "What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today!" What if there is no tomorrow? Actually that sounds familiar. We live in a "what if there is no tomorrow" kind of world. Cynicism is the flavor of the week, every week, every year. As a response to the "what if there is no tomorrow" mentality I gave up cable news (along with beer and chocolate), for lent. I unplugged from the hatefulness and dissension which is our national discourse and it was transcendent. It actually began as a reaction to the furor surrounding Rob Bell's new book, Love Wins. However, after a few trips around that merry go round I realized, "this isn't going anywhere new, just around and around," like Groundhog Day. I don't want to be a member of the church of "we're right and you're wrong." I needed to unplug from the religious squabbling, so I decided to turn the page.More... Matt and Kelly Grocoff just received the March/April utility bill for their 110-year-old Folk-Victorian home in Ann Arbor, Michigan's Old West Side Historic District. It was -$68.44 -- and yes, that's a minus sign before the dollar sign. Matt and Kelly's home (http://www.greenovationtv.com/missionzerohouse/Home.html) -- America's oldest net-zero energy restoration and Michigan's first net-zero house -- has been retrofitted so that it produces more energy than it consumes.Matt and Kelly use less than 10,000 kilowatt hours of total energy per year. Their 8.1 kW SunPower solar panels (which cost them $19,000 -- less than an SUV -- after a tax credit and utility incentive) supply that and more -- enough to earn them money back from the local utility. In addition to eliminating their energy bill, Kelly and Matt expect to earn an additional $1,100 per year by selling renewable energy credits back to the utility company.More... How many days into Passover do you get tired of the same old same old? Matzoh smeared with jelly, canned coconut macaroons and packaged sponge cake? These are the holiday foods of my youth and I wonder if, over all of these years, anything has changed. For several years when we lived outside of Créteil, the Parisian suburb that boasts a huge, thriving Jewish community, I would take the bus over to the neighborhood around the synagogue and stock up on kosher for Passover treats at the tiny
épicerie and at the supermarket where an extra space was opened up once a year just to stock with Passover foods. I would carry my prizes home, the cookies and cakes, candy and chocolate-covered matzoh, and fill the cabinets clean of their
Hametz, any and all foods not allowed on this holiday.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jamie-schler/homemade-passover-macaroons_b_852847.html)

One of the things that's a "thing" today is that people, driven by a Fox Nation story (http://nation.foxnews.com/president-obama/2011/04/25/wh-fails-release-easter-proclamation), are complaining about (http://www.memeorandum.com/110425/p50#a110425p50) the Obama White House's failure to issue a proclamation about Easter. The White House, of course, hosted an Easter Egg Roll, and the president also hosted an Easter-themed prayer breakfast (http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2011_04/029106.php), at which he said this (http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/2011/04/19/easter-prayer-breakfast):
"I wanted to host this breakfast for a simple reason -- because as busy as we are, as many tasks as pile up, during this season, we are reminded that there's something about the resurrection -- something about the resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ, that puts everything else in perspective.More... I recently met Manav Sachdeva Maasoom (http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=2903019&authType=name&authToken=wsyL&locale=en_US&pvs=pp&pohelp=&trk=ppro_viewmore) at a Chinese-Indian book reading in Manhattan (story (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/01/18/937160/-Wedding-Feng-ShuiChinese-Horoscope-Guide-to-Planning-Any-Wedding)) and he presented me with a copy of his beautiful hardback tribute to Emily Dickinson, Antonio Porchia, and Rabindranath Tagore (http://www.stewardshipreport.com/index.php/tidbit-rabindranath-tagore.html) that I did not have a chance to read until a lazy Sunday morning in Haiti. The Sufi's Garland is the perfect tome for a quiet morning. With the smell of fresh papayas fallen on the ground around me, sipping my strong Haitian coffee, with croissant on the side, I picked up this 104-page book of poetry. Manav, who now works for the U.N. in New York, began to write poems at the age of 11. These poems he wrote, inscribed, and compiled together on a trip of self discovery in Afghanistan a few years back.More... The Salt Lake Tribune today delves into the issue (http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politics/51636588-90/2008-billion-campaign-former.html.csp) of whether former Utah Governor-slash-U.S. Ambassador to China-slash-potential GOP contender for the 2012 presidential nomination Jon Huntsman is wealthy or not. Their conclusion: yes, he is. And yet! Is he wealthy enough to do something like self-finance his run for the White House? There, the answer is no. But either way, this is actually good news for Jon Huntsman. Here's the Tribune's analysis:More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/26/jon-huntsman-is-rich-but-_n_854061.html)

Late last year, I signed up for a review copy of Draculas, an ebook authored by self-publishing guru Joe Konrath and friends. Hundreds of bloggers and reviewers signed up for review copies. Unfortunately, one of the e-mails sent out from Konrath's crew was CC'd -- and not BCC'd -- to everyone who had signed up. This was unintentional, and apologies were sent for the error. Fine. But almost immediately, the list of reviewers' e-mail addresses was appropriated by several self-published authors hoping to ride Konrath's coattails -- resulting in a flood of spam e-mail requests to review their ebooks.More... Cleveland is a challenging place. It has lost more than 50 percent of its population in the last few decades. When you arrive at the airport you notice gates sitting empty with no planes to unload. Storefronts downtown are boarded up. Unemployment hovers around 25 percent. The streets seem to have too little traffic. And winter is bleak, long and awfully cold.Cleveland is not unlike other industrial cities that we've turned our back on through a disastrous mix of failed industrial policy, a tax system that rewards companies that export jobs overseas, regulations and public policy that reward financial gambling, and business that creates no real value at the expense of business that makes products that people can actually use, and politicians who have put themselves up for sale to the highest bidder.More... Secret spending in our elections is a toxic problem. But last week, strong steps in the right direction were taken to fix it. The Obama administration proposed expanding disclosure requirements for government contractors who spend money on elections. In addition, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, (D-MD), sued to get the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) to require shadowy outside groups to disclose the real source of their money spent in elections.Historically, the idea that sunlight is the best disinfectant in a democracy has been accepted as a non-partisan truth. Unprecedented levels of money are expected to be spent to influence the 2012 elections, and reformers are racing to implement measures so this unrestricted spending is above board. Now, opponents of rational reform are preparing the ground for their next campaign: the fight to keep political spending in the dark.More... Whether you're left, right, Republican or Democrat, and whether you drive a car or a bicycle, the cost of gasoline in America affects you.The cost of gasoline affects your neighbors and your community. It makes it harder for people you know and work with to pay for food and transportation. It makes anything derived from petroleum -- and that list is longer than you may realize (http://www.ranken-energy.com/Products%20from%20Petroleum.htm) -- more expensive. The clergy conference for the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama was scheduled to start this past Wednesday. We saw the dire predictions of the weather reporters and decided that we would proceed, hoping their warnings were exaggerated. As it turned out, with at least 300 killed, many more injured and incredible damage to homes and property, the forecast fell short of the reality. We cut the conference short and went back to work Thursday afternoon, many of us to communities and neighborhoods that are picking up the pieces. On the way to Camp McDowell, Bishop Henry Parsley and several priests saw a tornado. I saw one years ago in the Mississippi Delta -- terrible and beautiful in its own way, and destructive beyond comprehension. The huge tornado that cut an ugly swath through Tuscaloosa and into North Birmingham was off our scales to measure the power and intensity of such events; now we are measuring it by human loss and suffering. There are no scales for that, just people grieving and coping the best they can.More... (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bishop-john-mckee-sloan/tornadoes-terrible-beauti_b_855568.html)
