Title: Ogun State - Amosun canvasses strong policy on environment

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has called for an important policy instrument through Public Private Partnership for environmental protection. The governor gave the advice in his address at the climax of a road walk with the theme ‘UPLIFTING THE ENVIRONMENT:OGUN STATE GOES GREEN’, an initiative of the office of the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun supported by the state Ministry of Environment and the Forestry Ministry.

The Governor urged the entire citizen of the state to cultivate the habit of protecting the environment especially through tree planting.The Governor said ‘’ There is need for public private partnership in promoting an important policy instruments for environmental protection.

I urged you all to cultivate the habit of protecting the environment, especially through tree planting’’. This exercise, according to the Governor, is aimed at restoring our dwindling environment and it is apt , especially at a time Ogun State is working towards a healthy environment.Senator Amosun added that the state government is committed to the three R’s of reducing pollution, reducing emission as well as re-integrating waste into the environment, through the policy of backward integration.Governor Amosun who kicked off the ‘’Green Walk’’ awareness with the planting of tree alongside his wife and other government functionaries at the M.K.O. Abiola stadium in Abeokuta, observed that Ogun state is one of the environmental friendly state, adding that the initiative will ensure, a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.

‘Today, there is incessant climate change which demands adequate policy framework and effective measures. Particularly, concerning our environment, policies of sustainable development at all levels should be enshrined to prevent or at least reduce environmental degradation and pollution. This will contribute to acceptable habitats for all and respecting the abuse for the global resources. The economic, social and environmental condition should be developed and maintained in a balanced manner,’ he stressed .wife of the Governor, and the initiator of the programme, Mrs.Olufunso Amosun in her remark, said the exercise was meant to create necessary awareness on protecting the environment through tree planting.‘’It is part of a holistic approach towards encouraging the habit of tree planting, especially among the youths.

My office will soon embark on an all-out outreach to sensitise school children on the benefits of tree planting, especially cultivating the habit at a tender age’’, Mrs. Amosun said.The Promoter of an NGO , Fight Against Degradation of the Environment(FADE), Dr. Newton Jibunor and the Chairman House Committee on Environment, Mrs. Uche Ekwenife who joined the walk in support of the initiative of the state government , promised to partner the Ogun State Government in its efforts to ensure a cleaner and healthy environment.The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Lanre Tejuoso in his remark said the ‘’Ogun Goes Green ‘’ exercise was just the beginning as efforts would be made to plant no less than 50 million trees, representing ten trees per persons covering the over five million citizens of the state to make the environment green and healthy
