(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Labaran_Maku-300x192.jpg) The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku has charged the media in Nigeria to publicise positive developments and good things in the country by embarking on developmental journalism.
The Minister made the call at the inauguration of the 20-man Board of Directors of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and that of the Voice of Nigeria(VON), at the Conference room, Nicon Luxury Hotel Abuja, Tuesday, April 23, 2013.
Mr. Maku observed that the present administration has given the media, lots of freedom in the performance of its duties by assenting to the Freedom Of Information (FOI) Act, and enjoined the Press to make proper use of the FOI Act through balanced and verifiable stories.
The Minister noted that the media has a social responsibility of portraying the country in good light to the outside world by desisting from negative reports which tend to bring down the image of the country and urged the Press to help mobilise the people for a democratically united nation so that future generations will have confidence in the country.
Congratulating the Board members, the Minister noted that the Boards of FRCN and VON are crucial for the administration and successful operations of the two agencies, adding that the members are experienced people who have made their marks in various fields of endeavours.
Mr. Maku who assured the Board members of full range of liberty to bring their experiences to bear, urged them to provide ideas, advice, monitor and supervise the operations of the two prominent Parastatals for greater efficiency and productivity.
Responding, the Chairman Board of Directors of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Andy Aghaji, assured that they will not let Nigerians down, while the representative of the FRCN Board of Directors, Chief Elvis Agukwe assured Nigerians that they will contribute their quota in developmental reportage through the FRCN.
