Background The African University of Science & Technology is a private, Pan-African, coeducational, research university located in Abuja, Nigeria. The mission of AUST is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the African continent in the 21st century. AUST is dedicated to providing its students with an education that combines rigorous academic study and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse international and diaspora community. It is owned by NMI.
The Nelson Mandela Institution for Knowledge Building and the Advancement of Science and Technology (NMI) is a Non-profit Organisation established in 2004 to promote excellence in science and engineering and their applications to foster development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our major initiative is establishing African Institutes of Science and Technology as centers of academic excellence across the African continent.
These Institutions, African University of Science and Technology (AUST) and Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI) have both received grant from the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) in the amount totaling US$3.6million towards the cost of the program, Support to Capacity Initiative of AUST in Science and Technology and intends to apply part of the proceeds of the grant to cover remunerations to Program Officer employed for the two Institutions.
Objectives We are looking for a program officer to help in the planning, development and implementation of the different tasks related to the program financed by an ACBF grant.
Duties and Responsibilities Under the responsibility of his/her supervisor:
- Support the implementation, supervision and monitoring of the ACBF funded projects and other incidental activities of the Multilateral Project Unit of AUST
- Participate in the preparation of the annual work plan and budget for the implementation of the project or program
- Ensure that each member of the project/program team understands their responsibilities and accountabilities
- Keeps the program/project files and ensures that they are kept up-to-date
- Control program/project expenditures to ensure they are done in compliance with the rules and procedures of the institution and those of the funding agency
- Prepare periodic implementation reports for the institution and the funding agencies in accordance with the provisions of the grant agreement
- Conduct regular assessment and analysis of the status of program/project implementation, anticipating and identifying issues and problems, proposing how to solve them and following up with the actions taken
- Ensure coordination with other units/parts of AUST or NMI.
- Manage relationship with vendors and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to the identification and formulation of new projects or programs that further enhance the accomplishment of AUST's mission
- Report to and support the Project Coordinator and Head, Multilateral Project Unit in management of ACBF and other multilaterals funded projects. Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications/Experience/Selection Criteria (including skills, knowledge):
- Masters Degree or equivalent in Economics, Finance, or Business Administration. Background in Science or Engineering will be an added advantage.
- At least 6 years of relevant experience in project management in general and in particular 3 years in project management of development agencies funded schemes. development agencies funded schemes.
- Good analytical, quantitative and evaluation skills, particularly in project management and finance.
- Ability to clearly communicate, write, present and defend ideas and reports.
- Capacity to influence and earn the trust of others.
- Ability to work in a team and proven record of working in a complex environment involving various stakeholders with divergent interest.
Duty Station: Abuja, Nigeria
Duration of Contract: Three years. The first will be a probation year at the successful completion of which the contract would be renewed and extended for at least two more years.
Salary: Competitive and Negotiable.
