Job Title: Communications and Outreach Specialist

Location: Nigeria

Organisation: Sustainable Water and Sanitation in Africa (SUWASA)

Background: – Sustainable Water and Sanitation in Africa (SUWASA) is a six year USAID funded regional program implemented by Tetra Tech(a company based in the USA) with an overall goal of expanding access to safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable water and sanitation services among the un-served and under-served urban populations in sub-Sahara Africa. The program was launched in September 2009 and is currently implementing projects in 8 countries: Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Mozambique, Nigeria, Zambia and Senegal. The program has physical offices in five of these countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Mozambique, Nigeria and Senegal) and a Regional Office based in Nairobi, Kenya. – SUWASA has been implementing an urban water sector reform project in Bauchi State since May 2011 and is currently planning to launch two additional urban water reform projects in Rivers and Ebonyi States. The Bauchi project is expected to end in May 2014 with a possible extension to 2015 while the new projects in Rivers and Ebonyi will be implemented for a period of two years and are expected to end in April 2015.

Responsibilities: The Communications and Outreach Specialist will be responsible for all communications activities for the Nigeria project and implementation of SUWASA's communications strategy.

H/She will report to SUWASA Nigeria Team Leader. Specifically, the Communications and Outreach Specialist will:

• Ensure visibility of the SUWASA Nigeria program through further developing, preparing and disseminating regular snapshots, success stories, best practice articles, press releases and other promotional material, both web-based and in print;

• Provide updates for SUWASA's online content (with guidance from the Regional Communications and Outreach Specialist);

• Organizing visits to project sites, facilitating photo coverage and video footage for use in web based and traditional media to generate and maintain public interest in the SUWASA Nigeria initiatives in Bauchi, Ebonyi and Rivers;

• Write newsletter articles for SUWASA's quarterly newsletter and provide high quality images;

• Coordinate media events and provide accurate and timely information for press conferences, informational meetings for partners and stakeholders, etc;

• Support development of reports, including visual representation of findings (charts, graphs, pictures, etc.);

• Travel to program cities.

Primary Qualifications:

• At least five years progressive experience in communication, print and broadcast media, public relations or other related field;

• Good written and verbal communications skills in English;

• Competence in developing and communications materials including project profiles, snapshots, success stories, taking high quality pictures;

• Experience in developing web content and updating websites Strong personal initiative, problem solving skills, creativity, and ability to work independently and as a member of a team;

• Ability to manage several tasks at the same time; and • Experience working on USAID-funded programs
