Efe Sodje will have few regrets if his 17-year career in the Football League ends when his Bury contract runs out at the end of this month.
.
In fact, the former Nigerian international believe there is only one man currently still playing who can match his achievements.
.
"I had eight promotions at 11 clubs," said the 40- year-old centre-back. "I think there is only Ryan Giggs who can beat me on trophies, apart from that I don't think anyone else can beat it."
.
Sodje revealed penultimate Saturday, following the final game of the season, that his five years at Bury were over, as long as current boss Kevin Blackwell remained in charge.
.
His acrimonious departure was a sad end to what had been a match made in heaven.
.
Sodje was drafted in on loan by former manager Alan Knill in February, 2008, with the Gigg Lane outfit hovering perilously close to the League Two drop zone.
.
But, after confidently – and rightly – predicting they would not go down, he returned on a permanent deal to eventually lead them to promotion.
.
"When Alan Knill brought me here, I met the chairman, Brian Fenton, and the first thing I said to him was 'don't worry, we are going to stay up'," he said.
.
"We were second from bottom then and I said we were going to get promotion and I think he thought 'wow, this guy's mad'.
.
"Thankfully, we did stay up, then we got to the play- offs (the next season), and then promotion (the following season).
.
"Afterwards, I said to the chairman 'I told you', and he said 'yes, you did'."
.
Sodje's only regret is that relegated Bury failed to cement their place in League One.
.
"We are a good team, but obviously we got rid of some players we shouldn't have done," he said.
.
"There's ways we could have done it but hopefully the club will get back on its feet and back to the glory days."
Wow...can't believe Efe Sodje stills plays football. I am impressed!
