The incident occurred at around 4.00 p.m. (local time) near Jhiri, about 20 kilometres from the tourist town of Kullu. Officials said the number of deaths was expected to rise. Bodies were fished out from the turbulent waters and the injured taken to hospital. A huge crowd of people gathered at the site to watch and help in the salvage operations. The accident site is popular for adventure sports. Road accidents are common in India, where roads are often of poor quality and rash driving is very common.
