(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/nigerian-coat-of-arms-logo-5322-300x281.png) The President, of the Forum of Nigerian Women in Politics [FONWIP], Florence Igbinigie has said that the error of not according women their rightful place in the Nigeria constitution of 1999 should be corrected.
Igbinigie stated this at a forum organised recently in Benin City on the review of the Nigeria constitution as amended in gender perspective by FONWIP.
According to her, gender issues have been a recurring one amongst nations, communities, individuals, government and private institutions seeking redress on different matters.
"It is disheartening that matters that affect women are being trivialised in the public domains when it involves development issues". This, she said, has resulted in a system that puts our society in a sorry state.
Igbinigie remarked that it was unfortunate that various stakeholders have made efforts to remedy the situation without the desired result in the past.
She however, expressed the need to look into the constitution with a view to making it gender-friendly, "As a way of reducing to the barest minimum the injustice and violence against the Nigerian woman".
