Kampala, Uganda - A military general is accusing Uganda's president of trying to ensure his son replaces him as the country's leader, the first top military official to raise concerns about President Yoweri Museveni's succession after nearly three decades in power.
David Sejusa, one of Uganda's six generals, said in a recent letter to the head of the internal security service that he wants an investigation into allegations that those opposed to Museveni's son as a future leader could be targeted for assassination.
General Aronda Nyakairima, the army's top commander, said on Tuesday that the military was offended by Sejusa's letter.
The allegations by a top military official have shocked many in Uganda. Some analysts believe the apparent division in the military leadership suggests a power struggle amid uncertainty over when Museveni will retire. - Sapa-AP
