The amendment which the Ogun State Government is proposing to the contributory pension law if passed into law will be another step towards ensuring that civil servants in the State who have put in a considerable number of years in service do not suffer any loss.
The State Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle dropped this hint today in her office while hosting the south west Branch Chairmen of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASSCSN) who paid a courtesy call on her. According to Mrs. Adekunle, the new contributory pension scheme had remained a national issue which had been creating “fear of the unknown” in civil servants, adding that it was demoralizing to some of them, especially those that have spent greater part of their 35 mandatory service years before its introduction. The Head of Service disclosed that it was an attempt by the State Government to address this fear that it decided to propose an amendment to the contributory pension law, adding that awareness campaign programme would be organized soonest to educate and sensitise the workers on this. Assuring that her pledge to continue defending the course of the workers still stands, the number one civil servant reiterated the commitment of the present administration towards workers welfare saying “we have a governor that is passionate about workers; anything that concerns the workers is always paramount in his mind”. The Head of Service reminded the labour leaders of the need to make dialogue their watchword always while agitating for improvement in workers’ welfare, noting that unionism had gone beyond table banging. Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the forum who is also the Oyo State branch chairman of ASSCSN, Comrade Akinyemi Olatunji acknowledged that the background of the Head of Service in unionism was a major contributory factor to the robust industrial harmony existing in the State. Comrade Akinyemi noted that the State Branch of the Association remained a pacesetter in the Federation owing to the lots of achievement it had recorded over time. He lauded the State Government for its welfare package for the workers, pointing out that its huge investment in infrastructural development had not relegated its responsibilities to the civil service to the background.
