Title: Govt tasks labour on productivity as wage bill hits N1 trillion
Post by: TGD on Apr 14, 2011, 10:05 PM
THE Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Mamood Yayale Ahmed, has tasked public servants on enhanced productivity to justify their new wage.

He spoke yesterday, when the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abdulwahed Omar, led the delegation of the labour union to his office in Abuja.

Yayale said that with the existing wage bill rising up to N1 trillion a year, there was the need for workers to reciprocate government's gesture with hard work and dedication to duties.

The SGF continued by charging union leaders to objectively look at areas where there were leakages and proffer solutions so as to curb the decline in civil servants' output nationwide.

"It was right for workers to ask for the right wage but they should also give in their best. With the public service wage now over N1 trillion, there is the need for both labour and government to objectively look at areas, where there are leakages so that workers can give in their best. Nothing can work if we don't create avenues for enhanced productivity," he said.

Assuring Omar, who was recently re-elected as NLC president of his support, Yayale reiterated that there would be no improvement in the civil service if workers did not create avenue for enhanced productivity.

Earlier, the labour boss said his visit to the SGF's office was, among other reasons, to thank him for the role he played in ensuring that the union's wage demand was met as well as to remind him of the need for the Federal Government to resuscitate the Government/Labour Relations Committee. According to him, it would serve as a platform for both parties to liaise towards enhancing their relationship.
