The state governments are, however, demanding for between 10 per cent and 25 per cent discount on the asking price. Addressing newsmen on the outcome of the monthly National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja yesterday, Edo's Gov. Adam Oshiomhole said the council discussed and supported INEC's proposal to sell the laptops to the state governments.
He said the council agreed that INEC should give discount of 25 per cent on the used laptops and webcams and 10 per cent on the new ones.
"We also discussed the offer by the INEC to dispose of 78,701 laptops and webcams to states.
"INEC has surplus machines and I think they are updating their system and they thought rather than waste this huge number, they offered to sell them to states and we are all in agreement that they would be useful to have these machines distributed to our various secondary schools across the country.
"They are in two categories. Some are described as 'very good' and some are fairly used and NEC agreed that we should ask INEC to grant us 25 per cent discount in respect of the fairly used and 10 per cent on the new ones."
"Generally, it was considered that this is a good offer from INEC and we all want to take advantage of it."
Oshiomhole added that further negotiation on the mode of payment for the equipment would be concluded with INEC.
Also addressing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, Gombe State's Gov. Ibrahim Dankwabo announced the constitution of a NEC sub-committee on concessionary facilities from international funding organisations.
He said facilities were being offered to both federal and state governments by different international funding agencies to fund high impact projects in vital areas such as infrastructure, housing, water supply, erosion control and employment generation.
One governor represents a geo-political zone as members of the sub-committee.
Other members of the sub-committee are Ministers of Finance and National Planning, Chief Economic Adviser to the President, and Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters. (NAN)
