As part of efforts to check the incidence of flooding in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, the Chairman, Kehinde Bamigbetan has disbursed the sum of N2.9million to the 74 Community Development Associations, CDAs, as grants for clearing of drainages.
The council had, last year doled out N2.76million to 69 CDAs for similar exercise which the chairman described as successful, even as each received N40, 000.
Addressing members of the CDAs at Ejigbo town hall, Bamigbetan said "this is the second time our administration will disburse grants to CDAs for the purpose of clearing drainages in two years, last year we gave out N2.7to 69 CDAs and the exercise was successful".
The council chief told the community leaders that the sum of N40, 000 to each CDA for desilitng may be little especially as it has been predicted by experts that this year's rains will be heavy.
Bamigbetan added that the initiative is proactive,as the CDAs are expected to start the exercise immediately after receiving the grant.
He informed them that they should not see the disbursement of the fund as failure of the council in the discharge of its statutory roles, but as a deliberate effort to partner with CDAs in tackling various environmental challenges confronting their communities.
,Bamigbetan added: "Our experience last year, showed that it is important to work with the people as regard finding solutions to their problems, and that is why we decided to allow you clear the drainages, because you are familiar with your environment and you know where you have problems."
