Recently, about forty six Abia youths said good bye to unemployment as they took delivery of 46 new vehicles for commercial transportation.
While distributing the vehicles to the beneficiaries in Umuahia, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Comas Ndukwe said the gesture was to give the unemployed youths, a sense of belonging and a source of livelihood.
He said that the buses and taxies are the first of the Abia Yellow cabs that would be used for commercial transportation in the major cities of Aba and Umuahia as well as in some other cities.
The chief of Staff charged the beneficiaries to ensure that the yellow cabs were used for commercial purposes for which the government gave them the vehicles, as anyone caught diverting it to other purposes stood the risk of forfeiting it. "The vehicles have been registered in your names and you are receiving them along with the keys. We will monitor the movements of the vehicles and once we discover that they have been diverted to other uses, the police would be directed to impound them ", he warned.
He suggested that some of the beneficiaries could be stationed at the high brow hotels in the State so that the vehicles could be rented out to tourists to have cosy drive in the Abia yellow cabs.
It could be recalled that the State recently launched the Ochendo Youth Empowerment Programme during which 200 vehicles, computer sets and other empowerment items were distributed.
In his remarks, one of the beneficiaries, Mr Festus Johnson who received a Passat wagon said the gift was like a dream as he never thought he would ever own a vehicle and commended Governor Theodore Orji for looking out for the unemployed in the State to empower them.
