Change, they say is a necessary evil in our world. Without change, the world will not be a beautiful place to dwell. Anytime the wind of change blows, there are always those that will be swept along with it and certainly there will be those that the turnaround will bring to limelight. It is a law of nature.
The recent change witnessed by the Taraba State House of Assembly brought Haruna Tsokwa, Member representing Takum I Constituency and Tanko Maikarfi of Gassol I constituency as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively. While Albasu Kunini of Lau Constituency and Liman of Jalingo I constituency as Majority and Minority leaders respectively and this was widely applauded across the State.
This could probably be in line with what Mandela says that "To be free is not merely to cast ones' chains, but to live in a way that there is respect which enhances the freedom of others." What went wrong was what many observers described as lack of commitment from the erstwhile leadership led by Istifanus Gbana to relieve his colleagues of chains of lack of direction from the House Leadership and by extension, the State at large, because of material gains.
Tsokwa's emergence as Speaker is viewed with some distinctive eye as a fulfilment of destiny, because it has been the principle of the legislature not to allow a first timer lead the House. His selection became a surprise to the people of the State.
However, looking at his personal characteristics as a man endowed with humility, quietness and calmness of nature, with a sense of dedication to his responsibilities; a man who is ready and always ready to give back to the community their dues. In spite of the type of Nigeria's democratic practices, he is the only true choice of the people who was elected without influence from any quater and have since been maintaining this close ties with the electorates.
In his constituency, his foot prints are glaringly seen. He was described by the District Head of Chanchanji, HRH Tor Mchivga as an unforgettable representative since the inception of democracy in Nigeria. The wise choice of the present House' leadership consisting of Honourables Tsokwa, Tanko, Albasu, Liman and Josiah Kente; never again shall it experience the oppression of one another by another and suffer the dignity of being the problem of the State.
