Bauchi state government has expended over N800 million on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), for its civil servants, according to the Head of Service, Abdon Gin. Gin spoke at the weekend when he received members of the Executive Committee members of the Bauchi state chapter of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) led by its chairperson, Hajia Kaltume Abdulahi Shall.
According to Gin, about 14,000 civil servants have so far benefitted from the scheme since its introduction in 2009. In order to sustain the scheme as well as make it effective, Gin said his office set up a committee on revitalization of NHIS in the state. He appealed to civil servants to assist government by giving their contribution for the sustenance of the scheme noting that, "government has been shouldering the expenses alone and we want you to assist by contributing your five per cent."
He expressed the determination of the government to support NAWOJ programes to enable them achieve their aims and objectives.
Speaking earlier the NAWOJ commended the Head of Service for ensuring a good working relationship between the state government and civil servants saying, "we are not unaware if your role in cementing the existing cordial relationship between government and workers in the state and we hope you will maintain the spirit.
"The Bauchi state Governor has made history by being the first state under the present dispensation to disburse loans of brand new cars and other gestures to its workers as well as ensure that different categories of workers undergo training g within and outside the country."
