(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Fashola-300x192.jpg) In a bid to catch them young, the Lagos State Government has embarked on a massive enlightenment campaign on the need for the young generation to imbibe energy-saving attitude. In view of this, the State had initiated the power kids programme under the auspices of the Lagos State Electricity Board since 2011 and organized training for junior secondary schools.
Speaking during the Power Kid Award Ceremony in Lagos recently, the Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said the initiative formed part of a long-term development plan to make our citizens understand the importance of conserving energy, a move that will ensure that we protect the environment for our children and posterity.
Thirty schools participated in 10-week training on the study of electricity, the Governor said, "During the 10-week programme, they learnt about various topics such as the history of electricity, energy efficiency and sources of renewable and non-renewable energy. They also conducted several electrical experiments to build on the knowledge they had".
He noted that energy consumption was set to grow by a third over the next two decades alone, adding that the race for limited resources only the energy that would win. The Governor further said, "While we are operating at a sub-optimal level of power generation, we will never reach a point where power is sufficient unless we understand the need to use it efficiently".
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mrs. R. Obasa, said "Commendation should be given to the management of the state electricity board for his initiative to train our Junior Secondary School Students in the study of Electricity. This will no doubt, colour the career choices of these students in future, and will have a positive development for our country in the area of technology and science. Today, almost everything is powered by electricity and so it's a welcome development if the interest of our children is captured at an early stage."
