The Bureau of Transportation in Ogun State has stated that it will continue to take necessary steps to ensure sanity and safety of all road users across the State in line with government mission to rebuild. The Senior Special Adviser to the State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Gbenga Opesanwo who dropped this hint today in Abeokuta said part of the measures to be taken in this direction was the establishment of a drivers institute to address poor driving habits and improve vehicle inspection model.
The senior aide to the Governor was addressing a ministerial press conference on the second year anniversary of Governor Amosun, disclosing that the Bureau would also in this regard deploy brand new vehicles under its taxi scheme and more intelligent traffic signals and explore pragmatic means of addressing anticipated traffic issues. He stated that under a public private partnership arrangement, the State had introduced a bus mass transport scheme encompassing both inter and intra state service since August last year which had transported over 380,000 commuters.
Opesanwo whose bureau supervises the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corp (TRACE) and the Parks and Garages Development Board (PAGADEB) pointed out that in the last two years, TRACE had undertaken rigorous awareness on road safety, adding that it had apprehended 11,396 vehicles 6,647 motorcycles and 108 trucks for various traffic offences.
He added that TRACE had also during the period carried out a total of 410 rescue operations and responded to traffic situations on major highways to ensure smooth vehicular movement
According to Opesanwo, PAGADEB on its part had in the last two years successfully resolved conflicts and reconciled different factions of transport unions across the State, adding that it had equally abolished illegal motor parks and sale of hard drugs as well as alcoholic drinks around the 43 motor parks approved by government.
Debunking an allegation that PAGADEB collects illegal fees from operators of unauthorised motor parks, its General Manager, Alhaji Ayo Ogunsolu said the N10,000 fine being collected from offenders was authorized by the law adding that receipts were usually issued for such fines.
