Former head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to resign due to his government's failure to address the lingering security challenges facing the country and for his alleged gross incompetence in running the affairs of the nation. Buhari, who gave the advise in an interview with newsmen at his Daura residence, Katsina State, said "This is not good leadership to send soldiers killing innocent people and raping their women. The government should leave the stage for those who can provide good leadership.
"I am a soldier and I participated in the civil war. We have our code of conduct in our operations but now you allow people to just go harassing people and killing them. Just because one or two soldiers were killed, you just go out killing everyone on sight like what happened in Baga and Bama," he alleged.
The former Head of State, who looked visibly worried by the recent deteriorating security in situation the country, continued: "Even the soldiers that were brought to take over from police are now behaving like the police by collecting bribe from people. How can you block a whole neighbourhood, killing any one at sight?
"When the Niger Delta problem started, late President 'Yar'adua sent aeroplanes to bring their leaders to Abuja where they were given money and trained on some skills. But when the Boko Haram issue began, what happened? Soldiers were sent to kill them. Their leaders Muhammad Yusuf who was captured alive was killed, his In-law was killed; their property destroyed. We should learn to be just to all."
According to Buhari, even during the Nigerian civil war their commander, Mamman Shuwa made sure they abide by the code of conduct given to them while independent monitors from outside visited them to make sure they abide by the rules of engagement as given to them by then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
Buhari therefore advised all security operatives to abide by the rules of their operations, adding: "Now, you are fighting Boko Haram are you going to kill them all. The best practice is to arrest them and make them face the wrath of the law."
