Ogun State Government has says the state has clearly emerged as one of the most educationally advanced state in the federation through its thorough and well planned system of education, which more often than not serves as a model for other states.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Segun Odubela made this known while fielding questions from newsmen at the 2013 Ministerial Press briefing marking the 2nd year anniversary of the state government in Office.
Odubela said “having realized that the education sector is one area where the state for ages has comparative advantages over other states in Nigeria, the Senator Ibikunle Amosun led administration has invested heavily in rebuilding of infrastructures, training, re-training and motivation of personnel, encouraging students and pupils to excel and sanitizing the entire sector for effective delivery”.
According to him, 22-23% of annual budget has been devoted to Education inline with UNESCO recommendation, adding that about N2 billion has been expended on the purchase of free textbooks distributed to all primary and secondary School pupils and students in public schools while N750 million was spent on the provision of instructional materials.
Odubela disclosed further that during the period under review, N120 million was expended on bursary, scholarship and grants to students of the state origin and N5.44 billion paid as monthly subvention to all tertiary institutions in the state pointing out that government disbursed N68 million as counterpart fund for UBE 2011 project Intervention.
On Infrastructural development, the commissioner explained that government is constructing 15 model schools with boarding facilities out of the proposed 28 with each having a carrying capacity of 1,000 students while it has equally rehabilitated 1,234 classrooms for primary and Junior Secondary Schools, supplied 7,148 set of teachers’ furniture for public schools and a sum of N140million spent on human capital development programme for teachers.s
Odubela however, assured that Government’s commitment towards providing free qualitative and affordable education to all citizens of the state remains unwavering.
