(http://ogunstate.gov.ng/images/stories/gefty%20intiative.jpg)Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has restated the commitment of his administration to the mental, physical and social development of its children. He noted that the massive investment of his government in free education, free health services, sports, among others, were geared towards ensuring total child development in the state.
The governor lauded the GEFTY (Green Education For The Youths) programme of the Wife of the Governor, an initiative aimed at making school children Green and Peace Ambassadors. Amosun spoke yesterday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta during the celebration of the 2013 Children's Day, which had as its theme, 'Our Children, Our Future: Our Collective Responsibility'.
Amosun noted that "the commemoration of Children’s Day every 27th May is special in the lives of our children, who by Providence are our most valuable assets, on whom the hopes and aspirations of this country depend." He urged parents and governments to see the annual event as an avenue to review the needs and aspirations of children in the past years and make projections for the future.
He restated that his government would be unwavering in providing free, functional and productive education in order to bring up a generation of employers of labour rather than job seekers. "Towards this end, we have re-introduced into the curriculum of our schools, technical and vocational subjects such as Fine-Arts, Music, Home-Economics, Technical Drawing and Agriculture," the governor said.
Amosun lauded the GEFTY (Green Education For The Youths) scheme of the Wife of the Governor, which aims at ensuring a sustainable environment. Under the GEFTY project, children and citizens in general are expected to swap to green habits, conserve resources and energy, reduce waste production, reuse and recycle when possible, plant and nurture trees.
The Green Education project will also promote knowledge of deforestation, global warming, climate change, greenhouse gases and green career opportunities, all aimed at preserving the environment for the benefit of humanity.
