Barley a week to the one year anniversary of the death of more than 153 passengers aboard a Dana Airline that crashed in Lagos, 11 families of the crash victim has so far received the mandatory $100, 000 compensations while 62 others has taken the airline to court.
Spokesperson for the airline, Mr. Tony Usidamen told reporters that 62 families members of the victims, both Nigerians and foreigners has sued the carrier over the accident involving one of its aircraft on June 3, 2012, just few minutes to landing at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
Usidamen said compensation to such families' representative complete verifications and legal bottlenecks involving such families.
According to him "11 families of the crash victims had received full compensation of $100,000 while about 21 more, whose grant of probate had been processed would receive full payment soon".
Also he affirmed that as at 24th of this month, 125 families who completed their claim forms and whose verification were free of any controversy had received interim compensation of $30,000 following legal verification of documentation and next-of-kin status.
Again the Dana spokesperson disclosed that family representatives of 8 victims were yet to submit any documentation.
"Nine severely affected ground victims who lost their properties were identified a while seven accepted the initial compensation which varied according to the extent of loss suffered, two declined".
Furthermore he said "Delay in completion of the payment process is due to incomplete documentation, mwultiple claim cases, challenge in securing grant of probate/letter of guardianship (in the case of minors) and legal suits. Our insurers are, however, sparing no efforts in processing all claims in accordance with the applicable law.
"Progress is also being made in compensation of ground victims and negotiations are on-going with affected residents to settle all genuine claims within the shortest possible time," Usidamen explained.
