He said one of the cardinal principles of democracy is openness and transparency. "Therefore, those in authority must be open and transparent in the conduct of their activities at all times," he said. According to him, even though the country is faced with various challenges in its march towards nationhood, Nigerians should roll out the drums and celebrate the 14 years of its democracy. The Speaker said we should not forget so soon, the devastating effect of military rule and how past dictatorships have stunted the growth of the country and severely hampered the freedom of choice of Nigerians. While congratulating his fellow countrymen and women for the auspicious day, Tambuwal reiterated the determination of the House of Representatives to play its constitutional role for the benefit of all.
