A one–day cancer awareness campaign organized by the National Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ), in collaboration with Preventive Health Care Initiative (PHI) has ended in Port Harcourt.
While speaking, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rivers State Chapter, Mr. Opaka Dokubo urged youths to make adequate use of health information available to them for the prevention of cancer and other health hazards.
Mr. Dokubo pointed out that cancer has no cure, but could be prevented when the right information is provided on time and utilized. He appealed to participants who were drawn from selected secondary schools, to take the campaign serious.
The NUJ Chairman commended NAWOJ and PHI for organizing programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of the people.
In her address, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Miss Enale Kogu said the programme was aimed at educating the youth on the dangers of cancer and how it can be prevented.
According to her, the health of the youth is vital to the society because they are the future leaders. She said that NAWOJ is packaging programmes that would positively impact on rural dwellers as well as the urban areas.
The programme featured a lecture by the programme co-ordinator of PHI, Dr. (Mrs.) Dorathy Okoh who educated the students on the cause and prevention of cancer. She informed her audience that balanced diet regular exercise, clean environment, abstinence from alcohol and smoking would reduce cancer.
