The workers under the umbrella of Coalition of Closed Unpaid Textile Workers Association are demanding the payment of their salaries and gratuities owed to them since 2001 by their companies The protesters accompanied by their wives handed a letter to the Governor of Kaduna state, Ramalan Yero for other northern governors. Marching slowly and patiently along some major roads in the state capital, the aggrieved workers lamented that since the closure of the textile factories between 2001 and 2003, they are yet to collect their gratuities and terminal benefits. According to them, this has brought severe hardships with some of their colleagues passing away owing to lack of money to take care of themselves and their families. At the Kaduna state Government House where the angry workers presented their letter for onward transmission to the governors, they were however, assured by a representative of the Governor that their plight would be communicated to the relevant authorities. With the collapse of economic activities in the north coupled with Boko Haram's insurgency and high level of poverty, the protesters urged governors of the 19northern states to stop paying lip service to their welfare and revive the textiles industries that once served as the pride of the region and the country.
