Spanish under-21 international Daniel Carvajal has re-joined Real Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen after the Spanish club exercised their buy back option on the right-back.

Carvajal joined Leverkusen last year in a deal worth five million euros but after establishing himself as a first-team regular with a string of impressive performances this season, Madrid have taken up their option as part of the original deal to re-sign him for €6.5 million.

"Real Madrid have exercised their contractual option to buy back Daniel Carvajal," said a statement on the Leverkusen website on Monday.

"We're very sad that Daniel couldn't stay at the club.

But it was clear to us from the start that Madrid would come to recognise his ability sooner or later," Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Voller added.

"He's been so impressive this season that Real's decision came as no surprise for us."

Carvajal is currently away with the Spanish under 21 side preparing for the European Championships, which start in Israel later this week, and is expected to compete with full Spanish international Alvaro Arbeloa for a place in the Madrid side next season.
Real Madrid do not need players like this right now. They need to go for bigger players to stay relevant in Spain.
