Coach Pepe Mel has extended his contract with Spanish club Real Betis until the end of the 2017 season.

The 50-year-old Mel helped Betis return to the first division in his first year with the Andalusian club in 2010-11.

After consolidating their place in the top flight last season, Betis finished this campaign in seventh place and earned a Europa League berth.

Mel says that his decision to renew his contract was influenced by the club's trust in him "both when things were going well and not so well."
