Nigeria will be among the first countries to sign the Arms Trade Treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in April, Mr. Gbenga Ashiru, the Foreign Minister said on Monday.
The treaty, the first of its kind to regulate the global trade in conventional arms, opened for signature in New York on June 3 and will enter into force after it has been ratified by 50 states.
"Nigeria played a key role in getting the treaty ready. Nigeria will be one of the first countries to sign it.
"I will sign iI on behalf of the country in New York soon,'' Ashiru wrote in an e-mailed comments to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
NAN reports that African states have emerged as strong champions of a robust ATT, since many of them suffer from the presence of a large number of illegal small and light arms.
