The All Progressives Grand Alliance on Monday said Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State had no right to determine the zone that would produce the next governor of the state.
The party was reacting to Chime's declaration that Enugu North senatorial zone would produce his successor in 2015.
According to the governor, the arrangement is in line with the Peoples Democratic Party zoning formula.
However, the APGA through its National Chairman, Mr. Maxi Okwu, said the race should be open for all, irrespective of the purported zoning formula.
Okwu accused Chime of playing God, "which he knows he cannot".
He said, "God gives power. In his own case, it was miraculous, through ex-governor Chimaroke Nnamani, that he became governor when he knew he had no plans for running for the governorship seat in 2007.
"It is not binding on us in APGA. For us, it is open. Any credible son of Enugu State, who can deliver, once he meets the party's requirements like winning the primaries, will be fielded, irrespective of where he comes from, as long as he is an Enugu son."
He said under his leadership, the party would contest all elective positions in the state in 2015, particularly the governorship seat.
He added, "Enugu State, to the best of our knowledge, has no agreed formula, like what the Imo State people call Charter of Equity. We don't have a similar thing in Enugu State.
"Our position is that over the years, since this dispensation from 1998, every zone in Enugu State has stiffly contested every governorship election.
"In 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011, the governorship elections in the state were stiffly contested by Enugu North senatorial zone (Nsukka) and other zones. But somehow, persons of the PDP, from Enugu East (Chimaroke Nnamani) and Enugu West (Sullivan Chime), won and serving out their tenure."
